When FVNERALS unveiled their debut full-length InchThe LightInch in the summer of 2014, the duo in truth embarked on a journey that would lead them into an ever-growing musical darkness. FVNERALS came into being when singer and bass player Tiffany Ström met guitarist and songwriter Syd Scarlet in the southern English seaside resort Brighton in 2013. Their joining of creative forces resulted in the formation of a dark doom act that also reaches out to and draws from ambient, drone, and a pinch of post-rock to complement what constitutes a particularly sinister and heavy sound. FVNERALS' first sign of life was the self-released EP InchThe HoursInch (2013), which was soon followed by InchThe LightInch. In 2015, FVNERALS returned with the second EP InchThe PathInch and relocated to Glasgow, Scotland where they started working on their sophomore album. When InchWoundsInch hit the scene in 2016, it sparked relentless live activities across Europe in each following year until the pandemic shut everything down. Compared to previous records, FVNERALS have taken an even less optimistic approach to songwriting on their latest masterpiece InchLet the Earth Be SilentInch. Originally released as a hand-numbered CD on New Year's Eve of 2004, Last Light captures Tor Lundvall's hushed songcraft at it's most ghostly and grayscale, stripped bare like branches bracing for winter. Initially conceived of as Incha piano album with sparse electronicsInch (with the working title November), Lundvall's palette steadily expanded, incorporating synthesizer, samples, bass, metronomes, and his signature spectral vocals. A journal entry from the spring of 2002 proved formative to his evolving vision InchI remember watching the blueish-grey light shimmering outside and hearing distant sounds echoing far away, eventually sinking into silence and stillness.InchThe album's 12 tracks are steeped in this sense of autumnal transience, of bearing witness to what fades. The music moves in whispered swells, between dirge, drift, and devotional. Synths chime like slow-tolling bells; percussion shuffles and shivers, icy and isolated; bass traces a low- lidded plod - it's a mode both austere and seductive, lulling the listener into it's landscapes of deepening dusk. Lyrically, Lundvall's language skews observational and depressive (Inchthrough lace curtains / grey light falls / dark clouds gather / in my soulInch), with each song like a gauzy glimpse into a different tableau framing winter's descent rust-colored leaves, frozen ponds, cold crescent moons.Lundvall has long considered Last Light a Inchpersonal favoriteInch in his discography, and it's easy to hear why. In texture, finesse, and pacing, it vividly evokes the rare mood of fragile, frosty pastoral noir depicted in his iconic oil paintings. The 16-track album opens with InchWar & Wonders' as Smoke begins his journey foreshadowing an upcoming battle featuring impassioned flows and rhymes describing the violent challenges of urban living. The track opens with a storyline of Smoke getting knocked down from his ongoing battles and a woman calling his name to wake up. The narrative then progresses with latest singles InchShame On YouInch and InchCommon SenseInch featuring SiR commenting on humanity's unique simplicity and embracing our differences. At the core of the album, InchStay TrueInch featuring John Legend accentuates the meaning of living your best life by staying true to your authentic self regardless of what life throws your way and the hardships you may face. Then InchGood ThingInch featuring Ty Dolla $ign offers an upbeat, positive track bringing light to companionship and finding joy in life through many avenues. Smoke wraps the project with rhythmic, jazz infused InchFree WriteInch reflecting on the crusade of each track leading to the end of his battles, and bringing awareness to the grieving of his city from politics to systemic racism and his influence on making the situation better for future generations. War & Wonders spotlights poignant themes, necessary social commentary, and the hurdles we overcome in order to appreciate what we have in this life. For Smoke, he showcases Inglewood's war on losing love, being in love, and battling himself as he is always being led in different directions.
