Fink - Perfect Darkness [VINYL LP] date 08/02/2011

Dominique Adams is full of heart - armed with self-exploring songs and fueled by the people and places she's moved through and settled into. Born and raised in central Alberta, she re-located to Winnipeg, taking who she was before and dovetailing that with who she would become. Her debut album, To Keep, is about this process. Actively choosing the people, values, ideas, and parts of your identity that are important to you. How do you keep these at your core as you move through different seasons? But don't mistake this for Dominique being stubborn and locked in her ways. To Keep is also an invitation to remain curious and open. Looking forward - it is an invitation to move through life, collecting bits from the people, places and experiences you encounter, absorbing them into yourself. Looking back - it is an invitation to examine what you are holding on to and decide whether you need to let it go or make space for something new. The result is an inviting, tape-soaked set of rich folk songs recorded with ome of her closest friends (Liam Duncan aka Boy Golden, Keiran Placatka and Austin Parachoniak). Driving the album are Dominique's gorgeous vocals - singular and iconic, inviting and heartfelt. They weave through the album like a thread - their surprising melodies tying together songs that dig deep, but land softly. To Keep was built in the same way Dominique has tried to build her life - surrounded by good people, good environment and good things. The things she has chosen to keep in her life, she also wanted to keep on this album - a feeling documented for her to hold. And now you can hold it too, maybe finding something to keep for yourself and share with the people you love.

IIUII is a retrospective, but it's just as much about the here and now. To re-record those songs with the maturity that Fin and his band members have achieved is about viewing the past through the lessons it has taught, not just remastering and repeating it. This was a chance to listen back through all the records, appreciate them for what they are, separate from the usual demands of which songs work on stage - and then give each song the treatment it deserves. With a solid fan base worldwide, Fin and his band have played the venues and festivals they want, and if not plain sailing, then certainly they've been in a space where they can operate with confidence, soaring with shoegaze layers one minute, back to purist blues basics the next. Fin has also participated in a sideline in co-writes on records by the likes of John Legend, a few soundtracks and the occasional excursion into dub or techno to keep things interesting.A1 Sort Of Revolution (IIUII)A2 Warm Shadow (IIUII)A3 Looking Too Closely (IIUII)B1 Shakespeare (IIUII)B2 Pills In My Pocket (IIUII)B3 This Is The Thing (IIUII)C1 Walking In The Sun (IIUII)C2 Blueberry Pancakes (IIUII)C3 Berlin Sunrise (IIUII)D1 Maker (IIUII)D2 Biscuits (IIUII)D3 Yesterday Was Hard On All Of Us (IIUII)

Isaac Stern's career as a solo artist, chamber musician, and much else (he led the movement to save Carnegie hall) was remarkable. These albums of his live performances are an eloquent testament to his musical insights, technical command and his gorgeous, luminous tone. Isaac Stern was born in 1920, in Krzemieniec, now in Ukraine. A year later his parents came to San Francisco. Violin lessons began at eight, with Naoum Blinder. Two years later he made his debut, playing Bach double concerto with his teacher. His Town Hall debut in 1937 was followed by a Carnegie Hall debut in 1943. He was the first American artist to tour the former Soviet Union-and as a result became a deeply respected figure there. The campaign to save Carnegie Hall began in 1960. The Six-Day War of 1967 saw his iconic performance of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with Leonard Bernstein on Mount Scopus. His involvement with Hollywood, which began in 1948 with his performance in Humoresque, was followed up in 1971, when he played on the soundtrack of Fiddler on the Roof. His travel to China in 1979 led to a resurgence of classical music in that country. He recorded prolifically and received countless honors and tributes. Isaac Stern passed away at the age of 81 in 2001.
