A24 delivers again! First Reformed is my second favorite film of 2018. The script is so vividly original while delicately tackling certain hot pressed issues. Combining moody themes and supplying delicious atmospheric tone! The direction and cinematography are gorgeous, haunting, and bleak. The design is so grounded and gives a very realistic and lived in aspect. A must see!

Was a slow burn, like an old movie horror, but a drama. Great acting by all involved with an open, abrupt ending. (tip: the light in the last scene, room)

A really good and unsettling movie. The darkness of the subject matter is what makes this movie pretty though provoking. Ethan Hawke is always great.

Ethan Hawke was severely snubbed for Best Actor, hes absolutely terrific. Slow burn thriller with a bizarre wrap ending, but interesting.

Haven’t actually seen the film yet but all I hear are positive things about it! I’m interested bc I think Ethan Hawke is a great actor but also bc it was written and directed by Martin Scorsese’s long time collaborator Paul Schader (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, etc.).

Harrowing and thought-provoking, First Reformed is s masterful film from director/screenwriter Paul Schrader. Ethan Hawke gives the performance of his career as a New England pastor experiencing a crisis of faith. A must-own!

This is a fantastic film. As far as the transfer goes this is pretty spot on.

I never expected to be so moved by "First Reformed", a small indie that tackles large themes such as climate change, mental health, and faith rather ferociously. Though it is a bit of a slow-burn at the start, it's impossible not to be drawn in by Ethan Hawke's magnetizing performance. He is masterful as Ernst Toller, a pastor who begins to unravel after an encounter a husband and wife who are environmental activists. The second half of the film is particularly strong, as Toller's polite and unassuming facade begins to crack, and writer/director Paul Schrader makes some daring filmmaking choices that add to the unpredictability of the film as it heads toward the climax. Though the ending has been controversial among audiences, I thought it was an incredibly bold, beautifully executed choice, and the final few minutes of the film have been seared into my mind. Regardless of how you respond to the ending, there is no doubt that this is a thought-provoking and important piece of art. A must-see.

Ethan is a true gem in this movie! His performance is for the ages.

This is a great return for Paul Schrader. The film is the perfect blend of Bergman's Winter Light, Bresson's Diary of a Country Priest, and Scorsese & Schrader's Taxi Driver.

First Reformed is another great A24 film. Ethan Hawke gives a great performance and this movie should not be missed.

I thought I would give this a chance, despite loathing much of Schrader's more recent output (Dog Eat Dog, The Canyons), because a friend recommended it, comparing it to Bergman's The Silence. While I can easily see the similarities, I was still not taken by Schrader's pseudo-existential dialogue, nor his unlikable characters. I thought a lot of the shot composition was nice, even though the film looked like it was shot on a DSLR, lighting was nice, but the film and its characters felt so empty and listless. 2/5

This movie was a surprise, I was expecting one kind of movie but I got a totally different one.

The ending of this movie is absolutely insane, great acting as well

Minimal started out kind of slow but kept my interest .

It's a really good film, but towards the end of the film it got a little too preachy. The picture is great and the sound quality though is somewhat lacking.

Ethan Hawke has had a long career and very steady work in films. He has basically made 2 types of movies: serious dramas and horror schlock. Along with "Boyhood" directed over a decade with Linklatter, "First Reformed" is one of the two best dramas he has ever appeared in.

I hate using Amazon, so Best Buy comes in clutch. I also hate having digital copies of movies, since companies seem all too eager to take purchased things away from people nowadays. A Best Buy packaged blue ray is just the right thing

Solid film that's a slow burn, but is heightened by Ethan Hawke's excellent performance.
