About this product

In 2025, the jazz world lost one of it's beloved talents in the arts of composing and arranging with the passing of Jim McNeely. But before he left, McNeely completed and recorded a suite of original music for his long time favored collaborative ensemble, the Frankfurt Radio Big Band. Expeditions is quite a journey, as the music suggests adventures through sound for individual musicians that McNeely had devised unique environments for. Originally from Chicago, Jim McNeely arrived in New York City as a young pianist in 1975, finding work with legends like Ted Curson and the burgeoning younger stars of jazz, like David Liebman and John Scofield. In 1978, McNeely began playing with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band at the Village Vanguard. A year later, Bob Brookmeyer became the music director of the band when Jones left. Brookmeyer was a major influence and led McNeely into focusing more on composition. Soon, McNeely was penning suites and long form pieces for Germany's WDR Big Band and others. But it was his long relationship with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band that was the longest realized and most rewarding, as McNeely became a resident composer and arranger. It is only right that McNeely's final piece, Expeditions, was written for and performed by the Frankfurt Radio Big Band. After years of working with the Big Band, McNeely had become familiar with all of the principal soloists and section musicians. On Expeditions, McNeely made sure to write in solo features for each member of the group, fully realizing an example set by the legendary Duke Ellington, who famously composed for each member of his vaunted orchestra in mind. Expeditions was premiered and recorded at Frankfurt am Main's hr-Sendesaal, Hessischer Rudfunk on June 13, 2024. Sadly, it would turn out to be McNeely's last premiere and conducting work with the Big Band. The program begins with InchThe Gathering

Jazz Station Big Band - Moods - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The album Moods was recorded in the legendary Jet Studio, Brussels, with it's unique and impeccable acoustic sound in September 2020. This album demonstrates their happiness of meeting and playing again in order to finally record their work, with the energy of a lion just freed from his cage. This recording features nine original tunes composed and arranged by some of the band's members, such as Stéphane Mercier, François Decamps, Steven Delannoye and Jean Paul Estiévenart. One of the advantages of having several composers in the band is the diversity achieved in the repertoire.

Moon Duo - Occult Architecture Vol. 2 (sky Blue) - VINYL LP

Limited sky blue colored vinyl LP pressing. Offering a cosmic glimpse into the hidden patterning embedded in everything, Occult Architecture reflects the harmonious duality of these light and dark energies through the Chinese theory of Yin and Yang. Following the Yin (feminine, darkness, night, earth) represented on Occult Architecture Vol. 1, Vol. 2 presents the Yang. Yang means Inchthe bright side of the hillInch and is associated with the male, sun, light and the spirit of heaven, and as such Vol. 2 explores the light and airy elements of Moon Duo's complex psyche. InchIn production we referred to Vol. 1 as the fuzz dungeon, and Vol. 2 as the crystal palace,Inch guitarist Ripley Johnson explains. InchThe darkness of Vol. 1 gave birth to the light of Vol. 2. We had to have both elements in order to complete the cycle. We're releasing them separately to allow them their own space, and to ensure clarity of vision. To that end we also mixed Vol. 2 separately, in the height of Portland summer, focusing on it's sonic qualities of lightness, air, and sun. Listeners can ultimately use the two volumes individually or together, depending on circumstance or the desired effect.Inch
