About this product

No fewer than four major composers - Faure, Debussy, Schoenberg and Sibelius - were inspired by Maurice Maeterlink's play Pelleas et Melisande (1892). Given that we celebrate anniversaries of Faure and Schoenberg in 2024, Paavo Jarvi here offers his reading of their settings of Pelleas et Melisande with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, whose Music Director he was for almost ten years. Debussy was so much involved with his own operatic setting of Pelleas et Melisande that the famous English actress Mrs. Patrick Campbell turned to Gabriel Faure to write incidental music for the play; this music then became an orchestral suite in four movements that is considered to be Faure's symphonic masterpiece. Schoenberg followed advice given by his much-admired role model Richard Strauss in 1902 and composed his own symphonic poem based on Pelleas et Melisande. It's complex combinations of musical motifs and the rich fabric of the large-scale orchestra not only captivate us but also reveal his own vision of this archaic and yet universal story. Album Tracks 1. Pelleas und Melisande, Op. 5~I. Die Achtel ein wenig bewegt - zögernd 2. Pelleas und Melisande, Op. 5~II. Heftig 3. Pelleas und Melisande, Op. 5~III. Lebhaft 4. Frankfurt Radio Symphony - Schmitt: La Tragedie de Salome & Chant elegiaque - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

In 1907 Florent Schmitt composed music to accompany a 'mimodrame' danced by Loïe Fuller, La Tragedie de Salome. His score is bursting with colour, energy and voluptuousness - and also with oriental influences stemming from his travels to Morocco and Constantinople, where he discovered the howling dervishes. The final scene features the heart-rending 'Chant d'Aïca', an oriental melody sung by a soprano. This music, though bold and modern for the listeners of 1907, nonetheless aroused the admiration of another composer, Igor Stravinsky, to whom Schmitt dedicated the Symphonic Suite he subsequently derived from the work. However, Alain Altinoglu, at the helm of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra of which he has been Music Director since 2021, has chosen to record the original version of this landmark of early twentieth-century French music. The beautiful Chant elegiaque, in it's 1911 version for cello and large orchestra, completes this programme. Album Tracks 1. Tragédie de Salomé, Op. 50~Prélude 2. Tragédie de Salomé, Op. 50~Deuxième Tableau 3. Tragédie de Salomé, Op. 50~Troisième Tableau 4. Tragédie de Salomé, Op. 50~Vif 5. Tragédie de Salomé, Op. 50~Quartième Tableau 6. Brandon Sanders - Lasting Impression - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Brandon Sanders returns to Savant Records, and his new recording is something to get excited about. After turning critics' heads with two previous recordings, Brandon is stepping it up with his new project that's all energy and heart. Part of the buzz comes from the stellar lineup. Joining the session is pianist Eric Scott Reed, certainly a name that carries serious weight in jazz today. Reed is one of those rare players who can make any ensemble shine, and his chemistry with Brandon is remarkable, to say the least. Also on hand is Jazzmeia Horn, the Grammy-nominated vocalist with the voice that's been compared to Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan. Joining forces with Sanders once again, she's featured on two tracks, and her singular style-which combines the timeless with the futuristic-brings a whole other dimension to the music. With music by the Gershwins, Mal Waldron, Eric Scott Reed and the leader himself, this is more than just another album-it's the sound of Brandon Sanders coming into full focus. The entire album is rooted in tradition, shaped by experience, and voiced with a clarity that marks him as an important presence on the US jazz scene. Album Tracks 1. 8/4 Beat 2. Lasting Impression 3. Our Love Is Here to Stay 4. Shadoboxing 5. Tales of Mississippi 6. Soul Eyes 7. No BS for B.S 8. Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)
