About this product

The midwest, particularly the part of the midwest Eric D. Johnson hails from, is a largely flatexpanse. Zipping through it on the highway, you'll see cities and towns rise up in the distance, but blink and you'll miss other man-made rejoinders to horizontal living dotting the landscape, hill after hill, built from the refuse of the past landfills. Some of these hills make for greatsledding spots, parks, and trails. Others turn organic waste into compost. The Landfill issomething else entirely a mountain dominating the landscape of Johnson's heart.Over the course of his now 25-year career under the Fruit Bats moniker, most of Eric D.Johnson's output has been the product of patience and fine-tuning. His songs, to borrow aphrase, are slow growers, given life on albums that encompass long stretches of time andmemory. Baby Man changed that - he disallowed himself from referring to material he'dbeen working on before laying the album down, utilizing the morning pages technique ofstream-of-consciousness, observational songwriting which flowed directly into his afternoonrecording sessions. It was both a breathtaking document of Johnson's skill as a singer-songwriter and an unvarnished account of the two weeks in which he recorded the album.Baby Man's closeness to Johnson's heart and the close attention to his voice and instrument it'sminimalist-maximalist ethos required uncorked something in him as he wrote towards a newfull band effort. Fruit Bats - Mouthfuls - VINYL LP

Around the making of Mouthfuls, Fruit Bats had coalesced into a duo with Gillian Lisee and myself. It was sort of like our own mini cocaine-free version of Rumors. She wrote the bridge to 'Magic Hour,' which is totally about her. We also co-wrote 'Track Rabbits' together which is still one of my favorite things I've ever done and probably my favorite song on Mouthfuls. I wrote 'When U Love Somebody' at the very last minute right before we started to record. It was kind of the throwaway track, which of course became by far the most popular song on the album and still probably the most popular Fruit Bats song, I was just trying to make something that sounded like Ray Davies, or even more specifically The Beatles Two of Us.' Also, I spelled 'you' with a 'U' to reference Prince. People still like dancing to this one. Pressed on Mint Color Vinyl & exclusive to independent record stores! Album Tracks 1. Rainbow Sign 2. A Bit of Wind 3. Magic Hour 4. The Little Acorn 5. Track Rabbits 6. Union Blanket 7. Lazy Eye 8. Slipping Through the Sensors 9. Seaweed 10. When U Love Somebody

Fruit Bats - Gold Past Life - VINYL LP

Gold Past Life marks both an end and a beginning for Fruit Bats. It's the end of an unintentional thematic trilogy of records that began with 2014's EDJ (a solo record by name, but a Fruit Bats in spirit) and hit an emotional peak with 2016's Absolute Loser. They encompassed years of loss, displacement, and the persistent, low-level anxiety of the current political climate. They were written in the wake of friends who left these earthly confines and families that could have been. But these salves, these songs on Gold Past Life, also represent new beginnings-the journeys that await after making it through troubled times. Gold Past Life is about rejecting notions of idealized nostalgia (InchGold Past LifeInch) and the process of grounding oneself in the present, both geographically (InchA Lingering Love,Inch InchOceanInch) and spiritually (InchDrawn AwayInch). With Gold Past Life, Eric Johnson of Fruit B hopes to bring more immediacy to the music and share positivity, hope, and motivation to keep on keepin' on with a wider audience. Album Tracks 1. The Bottom of It 2. Gold Past Life 3. Drawn Away 4. Cazadera 5. Ocean 6. Your Dead Grandfather 7. A Lingering Love 8. Barely Living Room 9. Mandy from Mohawk (Wherever You May Be) 10. Dream Would Breathe 11. Dream Would Breathe
