... through which the past shines... is a collection of the current complete works for guitar, both solo and in ensemble, by composers Nils Vigeland and Reiko Fueting. The music is emblematic of both composers' sophisticated voices, grounded in the tradition while forward looking in nuanced and elegantly integrated ways. Vigeland, whose mentors included Morton Feldman and Lukas Foss and who directed the influential Bowery Ensemble in the 1980s, is an important link in the InchNew York SchoolInch of composers. As director of the composition department at the Manhattan School of Music for several decades, he had a profound influence on several generations of composers, including current MSM faculty member and East German native Reiko Fueting. All the performances on this recording of music by Vigeland and Fueting by guitarist Daniel Lippel (ICE, Flexible Music), John Popham (Longleash, Either/Or), and Vigeland himself are the byproduct of close working relationships developed over the last 17 years. 2016 , the third full-length by San Francisco's Cool Ghouls. Fans of their self-titled and 2014's A Swirling Fire Burning Through the Rye will be stoked to hear how this band continues to evolve. If the first album was a celebratory debut and the second an earnest venture into deeper waters, Animal Races is like the crystal born of the murky womb that was it's predecessor, fertilized by the initial intention of the first. Not only have the Ghouls reaped the crop they sowed, they've baked it into some new kind of bread. For the uninitiated Cool Ghouls play rock 'n' roll. That's about all there is to it. They're California natives. They try to do a good job. They like to elevate and to get far out. They also like to keep it real. They like to make friends and have a good time. They don't like bullshit. They want to keep growing and learning how to become more powerful musicians. This record reflects the discoveries they've made over the last five years. The eleven tracks, recorded to tape by Kelley Stoltz in his backyard studio, are first and foremost documents of the four-piece's live performance of the tunes. Many of the songs were road-tested, but-unlike prior records-a few of them were not. For their debut album on Resonus Classics, The Gould Piano Trio presents three Trios with strong American ties. Charles Ives' (1874-1954) only Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano is one of his major works is without question. Amy Beach (1867-1944) was recognized in her lifetime as one of the most acclaimed American composers. Her Trio, Op. 150, was composed in 1938 and is steeped in the developmental processes of late nineteenth century models while quoting two Inuit folk songs. Although born and educated in England, Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979) wrote her Piano Trio as part of a chamber music competition in Pittsfield MA and has been described as the finest work in the genre by any British composer.
