About this product

Piano Classics presents the first volume in a major new series which promises to become the most comprehensive recorded survey of a central but now little-known figure in 19th-century Italian music. Born in Rome in 1841, Giovanni Sgambati cut an impressive but relatively familiar figure as a prodigious young virtuoso until, as a 21-year-old keyboard lion in the making, he was introduced to Franz Liszt. The encounter changed Sgambati's life. Liszt, perhaps the single most influential figure in European musical life in the middle of the 19th century, took the young Sgambati under his wing, and his faith was richly repaid. Still in his 20s, Sgambati conducted the Italian premiere of the Dante Symphony and even the premiere of the first (lengthy) part of the Christus oratorio. There is an irony that the single piece through which his name has travelled worldwide is a piano Melodie, a sensuously achieved transcription of the Dance of the Blessed Spirits from Gluck's opera Orfeo ed Euridice. Guaranteed to hush a rapturous audience into silence, it became the much-loved encore piece for the late Nelson Freire, among others. Too little of Sgambati's music for his own instrument is known beyond the Melodie. This neglect is being redressed in style by the Italian pianist Gaia Federica Caporiccio, born in Florence in 1988. The first volume of a projected complete series of Sgambati's piano works proceeds in mostly chronological fashion. Thus the curtain is drawn back with a flourish in the Gothic, Bachian arpeggios of the Prelude and Fugue Op.6.

Gaia Federica Caporiccio - Complete Piano Music Vol. 2 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Vladimir Jurowski's award-winning interpretation of Strauss's Eine Alpensinfonie with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin returns in a limited vinyl edition to celebrate the orchestra's centena ry anniversary, taking place in late October 2023. The Alpine Symphony was inspired by the composer's experiences during a mountain trail, and is an audience favourite thanks to it's picturesque, idyllic charm and powerfully evocative score. To Jurowski, the attraction of this piece lies not so much in the picturesque, but rather in Strauss's Nietzschean embrace of living in the now and the transformative power of being in complete harmony with sublime nature. In that respect, this album shares a kinship not only with Jurowski's previous recording of Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra (2017), but equally with his acclaimed interpretation of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde (2020), in which he also recognizes a composer coming to terms with the mortality of man while celebrating the immortal nature of Life. Seen in this light, Strauss's Alpine Symphony becomes much more than just an exquisitely scored postcard. The recording, first released in 2021, was crowned with an Opus Klassik Award in 2022

Flipturn - Shadowglow - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

2023 . In the time since 2015, Flipturn has mushroomed to reaches far beyond the walls of the Fernandina Beach garage they first practiced in. Built up by Dillon Basse (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Tristan Duncan (lead guitar), Madeline Jarman (bass), Mitch Fountain (synth), and Devon VonBalson (drums), the band is walking proof that the DIY approach is still alive and well in the modern music world. Growing up and maturing as musicians in a way that can only be done by spending years on the road together, Flipturn is primed to usher in the era of their debut full-length album.

Sergey Tanin - Piano Works - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

He is already being compared to Daniil Trifonov The young Siberian pianist Sergey Tanin (*1995) is one of the up-and-coming and most promising pianists of his generation. Now he presents his debut album on PROSPERO. With works by Brahms, Schubert/Liszt and Prokofieff, he can impressively demonstrate both a mature interpretational depth as well as musicality and virtuosity. Born in 1995 in Siberia/Yakutia, Sergey Tanin started to play the piano at the age of 5. At 11, he already performed with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra in the Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. After his graduation in 2019 from Moscow Conservatory (class of prof. Irina Plotnikova), Sergey continued to study at Basel Musik Academie with Claudio Martinez-Mehner. He is holder of the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship and in 2020, the Swiss Television (SRF) released a documentary about Sergey - InchThe Pianist Who Came In From the ColdInch.
