For decades, John Rojak has been a staple in American brass music, performing with a number of chamber ensembles and orchestras such as American Brass Quintet, Cleveland Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony; in Broadway shows including Les Misérables and The Producers; in big bands of Mel Lewis, Bob Mintzer, and Gerry Mulligan; and contributing to the pedagogy of the bass trombone as a faculty member of several institutions, including The Juilliard School, The Hartt School, and Aspen Music Festival and School. Needless to say he has taken the bass trombone and it's repertoire to new heights in the classical, contemporary, jazz, and commercial genres. Rojak presents his debut on Navona Records, Rojak Rocks, a culmination of his experiences until now in the contemporary music scene, both in New York and around the world. Each of the works on this album have a history for Rojak, a time and place that marks a transcending moment in his prolific career. Whether coming to him from a close colleague or through an unexpected opportunity, the works on this collection have contributed to the development of Rojak's extensive and varying career as a brass player. Not only do these pieces illustrate significant moments in Rojak's career and in the development of new works for bass trombone, some of them incorporate elements of genres in which he worked, including jazz and commercial music.

Bringing to light another of Hans Gal's gorgeously melodic and finely crafted scores, AVIE presents the world premiere recording of the Austrian émigré's Concertino for Cello and String Orchestra with Matthew Sharp supported by Gal aficionado Kenneth Woods conducting the English Symphony Orchestra. Gal's compositional output was vast, varied and consistent, from his early success in 1920s Germany, through internment during World War II, to his days in Edinburgh where he settled, became a respected academic and lived out his long life. His vivacious Cello Concertino was written in 1965, when he was 75 years old. The two spirited solo cello works were among his last, written at the age of 92. Inchhats off to conductor Kenneth Woods for making a case for Gal's elegantly built orchestral pieces... Mountain Top wanted to put out a CD with Johnny singing Muddy's parts, and me blowing Little Walter and James Cotton parts behind him with an authentic sound. We brought in my band, the Blues Survivors, Rusty Zinn on guitar, Bob Welsh on piano and guitar (Charlie Musselwhite Band), as well as two former Muddy sidemen, Paul Oscher (harp and slide guitar, from 1967-1971), and Francis Clay (drums from 1957-1966), who played on many of the original Muddy sides on Chess Records. Check out the amazing Steve Wolf on electric Fender bass getting a stand-up bass sound. If you close your eyes, you'd think you're in Chess Records' Studios in 1957.Inch
