Answered by GE AnswersHello, and thanks for your interest in these top-freezer refrigerators! These models use a refrigerant known as R-600a, a natural gas. R-600a is an environmentally-friendly refrigerant approved by the EPA and is also know as isobutane. It is non-toxic but is flammable. Care should be taken to avoid damage to the refrigerant tubing and service should only be performed by authorized personnel.
