The GE Opal Ice Maker is hands down one of my favorite appliances I’ve ever owned. The nugget ice is PERFECT—soft, crunchy, and exactly like restaurant or drive-thru ice. Once you have Opal ice, you can’t go back. It makes ice quickly, is super easy to use, and looks sleek on the counter. I love how consistent the ice production is, and it keeps up great whether it’s for daily drinks or having guests over. Cleaning and refilling are simple, and it’s been very reliable. If you’re on the fence—get it. It’s a game changer and worth every penny. I’m obsessed!

First off, this is NOT a traditional ice machine. It does not make regular ice like your freezer does. It's called nugget ice because that's really what it is. The individual ice “nuggets” are small pellets of soft ice. Regular ice cubes from the fridge are great for many things, but they aren't appropriate for those who enjoy eating ice. Additionally, the ice that is made isn't stored in a refrigerated or frozen area. It just goes into the clear bin and slowly melts back to water, only to be re-frozen again into fresh ice. This results in ice that is usually no more than a day old. The end product (ice) is great, but it's not for keeping canned or bottled drinks cold in your cooler. It's really for use in a glass or cup, with or without your favorite beverage poured in. The ice is soft enough to chew without upsetting your dentist. It works great with an already cold beverage as well. However, it isn't the best choice to actually chill a room-temperature drink. That's when you should use traditional cubes. So hopefully, you are getting the idea that this is simply a different kind of ice. As far as the machine itself, it has a lot to live up to. We went through two version 1.0 Opal ice machines, and that version had a checkered reputation. They worked, but were loud—often obnoxiously so—and suffered from reliability issues. The 2.0 model changes everything. My wife says it sounds like a white-noise machine. This is important if the machine is located in your kitchen or den. Version 1.0 suffered from design issues, and both machines we had died before their time. To their credit, GE replaced the first one under warranty four months after the warranty expired. The replacement lasted less than a year and didn’t come with a warranty. We went for a while without a nugget ice maker but finally got the V2.0 model on sale during Black Friday of 2025. These are not inexpensive machines, at least compared to no-name brands. However, we took a chance that the issues of 1.0 had been fixed in 2.0. So far, so good. The entire design of the machine is different, if not better. The sound—or lack thereof—is by far the best upgrade feature. Otherwise, the ice is really the only thing you should care about, and it's addictive. This machine is a high-maintenance appliance. It wants to be sanitized often and asks to be descaled every few weeks. This 2.0 model comes with a scale-inhibiting filter, and that's a consumable item. We have chosen to run distilled water instead of tap water (yes, distilled doesn’t have any taste) in hopes that it stays cleaner for longer. Both of these processes take time and require draining the water out of the system. So if you are opposed to cleaning it regularly, then find another model. The 2.0 version adds Wi-Fi (nice for controlling and scheduling ice production) and a light in the ice bin. Necessary, no; but nice to have. Only time will tell if the 2.0 version is more reliable than the 1.0. So far, everything is better, especially the sound when running. We have the Best Buy Total benefit of a two-year warranty. I would recommend some type of extended warranty on this appliance, at least for now. Maybe they solved all the problems, and this will last years and years. Only time will tell…

Makes pretty good ice. And doesn’t seem to take a long time. Only odd thing is that it is quite noisy. With an occasional very odd and loud screeching/stuttering that happens almost once a day. Followed all the instructions to ensure it works properly, which it does. Just randomly loud until it’s not.

I purchased the GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra Nugget Ice Maker for my fiance, and she couldn’t be happier! It operates quietly, produces ice in just minutes, and has become an indispensable part of our kitchen. Especially during the hot summer days, having cold drinks ready instantly is a game-changer. The sleek design adds a modern touch to our countertop. What I personally appreciate the most is having ice readily available after work to soothe my lower back pain. it’s truly been a relief. The built-in Wi-Fi and scheduling feature are incredibly convenient; I can set it to start making ice before I even get home. The scale-inhibiting filter ensures the ice tastes fresh and reduces maintenance needs. Overall, it’s worth every penny. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enhance their comfort and convenience at home!

We love our new ice maker! It is one of our favorite small appliances. It definitely does a great job making ice. It does require a little extra maintenance compared to our older model but it is worth it to have fresh nugget ice 24/7. We are very happy with it. The Pearland, Texas Best Buy is where we made our purchase and they were extremely helpful! They will be our first choice for any future purchases.

GE Profile is the leading supplier of ice makers that produce nugget chewable ice. GE offers a number of different models that offer various features. This GE Profile - Opal 2.0 Ultra Nugget Ice Maker is the top-of-the-line model that has every feature available. Look for the word: "ULTRA" in the description to be sure you get this flagship product. Unique features include: 1- Stainless Steel Ice Scoop (not plastic, as the other GE Profile models are) 2- Side Tank for additional water storage 3- All Stainless Steel front. Look above the clear ice bin. Ultra is Stainless Steel; the regular GE Profile is gray plastic at the top. 4- Scale inhibiting filter is included with Ultra; it is not included with any other GE Profile Ice Maker. This is an awesome ice maker; it is fully controllable by your cellphone or tablet. The ice is delicious & this GE Profile ULTRA earns my highest recommendation!

I've had this ice maker for about a month and I am loving it. The ice is the perfect texture for snacking. Cleaning it takes some time to learn but it's worth the process. I would recommend keeping it by a sink to make cleaning easier. Highly recommend!

A $600.00 item if include protection plan. I LOVE the ice. But this model you need sanitize( bleach clean cycle) every 2 weeks and every 3 weeks need descale (vinegar clean cycle) You have to replace the filter ( $30.00 item) every 3 weeks.

I love the wifi connectivity to set a schedule for it to run. It does want me to "sanitize" it every week, which is kind of a pain if you aren't keeping it right by a sink. But if you want nugget ice, there's no other way to go.

As much as I would love to write a wonderful reveal, unfortunately I am unable to. I purchase the ice-maker on November 11, 2024 and by 1 January it was given me nothing but trouble it keeps telling me to add water. It has a full side tank and I put water in the bottom tank. Neither make it make ice. It’s just tells me to add water there must be some type of sensor or something that’s gone bad not good for the price. That’s for sure. I’ve been trying to figure it out. We’ve tried everything making sure the doors shut all the way I’ve cleaned it four times and it still won’t make ice. I’ve did the bleach cleansing. I did the deep cleansing with the staining with the vinegar, pure vinegar, even that didn’t work. Nothing seems to clean it or do enough to make it make ice all it keeps telling me to add water even though it’s got enough water so I can’t figure out what to do for it returning it lotta waste I really like the ice tubes and the was good wallet lasted, but if these machines can’t make ice for at least a year When you’re doing maintenance weekly and it’s still not keeping it up and using good filtered water and it has a filter that they have you put in and it’s supposed to help distilled water doesn’t work. It doesn’t matter what you do these things act up and don’t make ice I haven’t found a icemaker that I can get past 2 to 3 months without a issue. This one for the price really was a disappointment. I was hoping I got at least least a year before having an issue. Sad not gonna happen. Totally disappointed with GE profile icemaker.

We love this thing so much!! It just works! If I could change one thing, I would want the plastic scooper rather than the stainless. The ice quickly freezes to it. It’s just makes it more of a hassle. I still would highly recommend getting this but also get the protection plan!! Our last one the water level indicator messed up and it stopped making ice. Lasted year and half, but we also have extremely hard water and I cleaned this as directed.

Love love love. We got this because we use a lot of ice. We use it every day and it has been a godsend. The only issue we’ve had is about a week ago, it started saying “add water” and shutting off when it did not need water. We are in the process of troubleshooting and think it might be the filter. Wish us luck!

We’re thrilled to hear your positive feedback about your new Opal! When it is past time to replace the filter, you may notice that your ice maker is no longer making ice. You may also notice the ADD WATER notification, even though you have water in the reservoir. If either of these things occurs, replace the scale inhibiting filter with a new Opal Replacement Water Filter (P4INKFILTR) or the Opal Scale Inhibiting Filter. This is a game changer if you like me have a refrigerator that makes bad ice or rarely works. The ice is fresh makes drinks taste like fountain drinks and makes a lot. It alerts to when to flush for sanitizing reasons. We turn machine off at night and back on in the morning and have ice all day. They aren’t cheap but BB and GE frequently have on sale.
