This is a Z-Wave device so you need something like the SmartThings hub to control it. Once you have it paired with the hub, you can use the SmartThings app to automatically turn on whatever's plugged into it at a specified time (or at sunset which changes based on time of the year). It can also turn off the switch at sunrise or a specified time. You would use this to control your sprinklers or your low voltage outdoor lights. I use it for the latter. I have the lights come on at sunset and go off at sunrise. I use my own custom software to do this, but SmartThings Hub has the capability and is easy to set up. Both the hub and my custom software fetch the weather forecast over the internet to determine sunrise/sunset. You can then trigger off of that, to turn on and off the lights. It's possible to do on at sunset, off at sunrise, or on at sunset, off at 1AM. That sort of thing. Before I installed this and set it up, the outdoor lights would come on at 5PM because the hardware timer was set to turn them on then. I'd have to keep going out and changing the timer depending on the time of year. I am lazy enough that I don't bother and the lights come on as much as 3 hours before sunset - a waste. If you control your sprinklers with one of these, you can base the watering time on weather conditions. Don't bother to turn them on if it's raining or rained recently. Turn them on extra, and at night, if it's hot out. This is all what smart homes are about.

The GE z-wave outdoor smart controller works perfectly with my SmartThings hub. Paired on the first try with no fiddling around. I used it indoors for a bit. I noticed a louder relay click than other controlled outlets and switches I have. Perfect for your outdoor z-wave needs.

Perfect outdoor zwave device, I have two that are used for out door lighting ( Christmas lights during season) and pool pump and I've never had an issue. They are paired with smart things and set on and automatic timed routine. Setup is a breeze with well documented instructions.

No problem connecting to zwave (smartthings). However, design with a cover plug that is really not useful with a device plugged into the outlet. A little overpriced at list price.

Have this tied into my SmartThings system, using a GE zwave wall switch inside to turn on both the permanent wall deck light and an outdoor lamp connected to this outdoor plug. Works very well so far. No noticeable delay.

Used to control my outdoor xmas lights with my Smartthings Hub. Worked great. Had the outdoor lights go on everyday a few minutes before sunset and at a certain time. Worked right every day. Recommend.

I bought a bunch of these so I could control my outdoor holiday lights via smart phone or Amazon Echo. Setup was easy and simple.

Works as described, had no problems pairing this with my ADT pulse system to operate outside lighting, I would definitely buy another if I needed one.

Very easy to set up and with Smartthings Hub and Alexa. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to control an outdoor outlet.

I love this plug, because it allows me to set a timer with my Z-Wave gateway, in this case a SmartThings hub.
