About this product

A new recording of Paganini's eccentric 'diary of invention' for guitar by a young Italian musician with a fast-growing reputation in both rock and classical genres. Giacomo Carletti took up the guitar at the age of 13, initially playing electric. Impressed by his talent, the composer Edoardo Catemario encouraged Carletti to take up the classical guitar. He now makes his career as a busy recitalist with the classical instrument while keeping up his pop and rock connections by playing electric guitar in several bands. As Carletti remarks in his booklet essay for his debut album on Brilliant Classics, the 43 Ghiribizzi by Paganini stand as a testament to his musical ingenuity and sense of fun. They present a showcase for his technical prowess but also reveal a lighter side to the virtuoso often caricatured as a dark and forbidding figure. The term Ghiribizzo is defined in Italian as an 'Idea bizzarra, capriccio improvviso'. Many less than a minute long, the 43 sketches sometimes start and stop abruptly; some are hardly more than tunes, others are eccentric fantasies. Many of them are based on existing material - not only the Mozart aria 'La ci darem la mano' from Don Giovanni, which Paganini acknowledges in the score, but other tunes he picked up on the way, popular and folkloristic, often anonymous in origin. No.37 of the collection has an esspecially rich back-story a fond musical memory of Paganini's meeting with Rossini in Naples, in 1820. The piece, divided into two parts, bears Rossini's name at the bottom of the first 16 bars, and Paganini's at the bottom of the next 16, perhaps as a recollection of a game where they improvised together.'in recording the Ghiribizzi,' says Carletti, 'I wanted to bring out the eccentric and eclectic character of the composer. I try to imagine Paganini as a rock virtuoso of nowadays and treat his music accordingly.'- Niccolo Pagani

Stefano Cardi - Transcriptions for Guitar - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

In recent decades, Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685-1750) works have undergone numerous transcriptions and adaptations. Since the 1960s, the guitar repertoire has seen the addition of several Bach pieces originally intended for the lute, an instrument that is undoubtedly among the most akin to the modern six-string guitar. Following the increasingly in-depth study of Bach's work and the spread of the classical guitar, several harpsichord pieces have also been transcribed and performed. This album magnificently displays these pieces by exploiting the rich dynamics and full polyphonic capacity of the guitar. The Clavier-Büchlein vor Wilhelm Friedemann Bach and the Clavier-Büchlein vor Anna Magdalena Bach hold an important place, as these collections offer a glimpse into Bach's familial and didactic spheres of action. Within the Friedemann Bach collection, we find the two Praeambula (BWV 924 & 926), characterised by arpeggiated writing, probably a model for students to create a first simple improvisation. Further on, the Fantasias that appear in the final part of the collection show a wonderful degree of contrapuntal complexity. Although there were 2 versions of the Anna Magdalena collection, the one which has survived almost in it's entirety seems to have been intended as a family album, with contributions not only from Anna Magdalena (J.S. Bach's wife), but also from her son Carl Philipp Emanuel and other composers. The pieces in this collection, including vocal pieces written for Anna (an accomplished singer), are most commonly small dance forms characterised by an essential and refined homophonic-style writing. The Anglaise and Minuet from the French Suite No.3, as well as the more solemn Allemande from the French Suite No.4, are clear examples of the gracefulness of these compositions, which show a subtler sound texture than those of other series of Bach suites, as wel

Gian Luca Barbero - Music for Guitar - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Giuseppe Rosetta (1901-1985) studied in Rome under Respighi but soon returned to his Piedmontese birthplace of Vercelli. There he remained, leading and enriching the local musical culture as an organist, choir conductor and music teacher. He spurned fame and dedicated himself to his vocation and to God. His beautifully crafted music is accordingly modest in expressive ambition elegant, reflective, at times melancholic, generally characterized by introspective, meditative qualities - nothing brilliant or demonstrative. Very little of it has been recorded, making this new album a valuable contribution to a wider appreciation of postwar Italian music. Rosetta taught composition to Angelo Gilardino, who eventually encouraged him to write guitar music, resulting in the Preludi per GIlardino of 1970. These are beautifully and idiomatically written for the instrument after close consultation with the guitarist. Also from 1970, the Canti della Pianura (Songs of the Plain) is a personal evocation of the countryside of the Po Valley where Rosetta lived and worked. The four movements correspond to times of day the dawn (Mattutino), the afternoon (Meridiana), the evening (Vespertina) and the night (Serenata). The Fantasia dates from 1979, but Rosetta's conservative idiom recalls the language of his teacher Respighi and contemporaries such as Casella and Pizzetti he wrote out of time, vividly evoking a lost era of Romanticism on an instrument that sings naturally of nostalgia and regret. As a student of Gilardino, Gian Luca Barbero has become intimately familiar with the private musical world of Giuseppe Rosetta, and is himself a guitar teacher of renown in Italy. The present marks his debut on Brilliant Classics within the tag's ever-growing library of guitar music.
