About this product

Outside Italy-perhaps beyond the shores of his native Sicily-the name of Eliodoro Sollima (1926-2000) has not traveled widely, beyond the accomplishments of his five musical children, and in particular the cellist Giovanni Sollima. On a previous Brilliant Classics album (96287) from 2022, Giovanni paid a touching tribute to his father's memory with a collection of chamber music.InchThis album is a winner!Inch reported Fanfare magazine, and noted how the Inchcompositional style of this substantial and serious composer developed significantlyInch between 1945 and 1995. This new album of Eliodoro Sollima's orchestral music covers a similar period, between the Aria for cello and strings (1945) and Attesa (1997).Attesa (InchWaitingInch) is the most substantial piece on the album, scored for the unusual combination of piano, horns, strings, and percussion a powerful seven-movement suite inspired by the suffering of a man given the death penalty in the US state of Virginia and executed in 1997. Sollima worked within a tonal framework to evoke, in his words, Inchthe frantic sequence of images, memories and emotions that torment the last hours of a condemned man's life.InchThe pianist and musicologist Anna Maria Sollima (sister to Giovanni) supplies insightful annotations, which trace the course of Eliodoro's life and career through the works recorded here. World premieres on record include the early Ouverture da camera (1948/50) and Rondò burlesco (1951) for piano and orchestra, carried forward by strong, cinematically flavored melodies. From 1968, the Concerto per archi (Concerto for strings) is another work with a political subtext, inspired by the shock arising from the assassination of Bobby Kennedy. But Sollima always stayed true to his Sicilian roots and continued to translate the idioms of local folk music in his own contemporary style a commitment exemplified by Neni

Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana - Orchestral Music - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Founded in 1951, the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana has been directed by charismatic maestros of international renown from the Romanian Sergiu Celibidache in the 60s to the Venezuelan Diego Matheuz and Duncan Ward in the present era. Now Gianna Fratta joins their ranks with a unique showcase of 20th-century orchestral masterpieces. Gianna Fratta opened the 2021-22 season of the OSS in Palermo with a concert featuring Martha Argerich as soloist in Schumann's Piano Concerto; she has herself won acclaim as a pianist, and now conducts leading ensembles across Italy. That program concluded with an explosive account of the suite from Stravinsky's Firebird ballet. Fratta likewise draws a full palette of orchestral color from the Sicilian orchestra in this studio account of the Rite of Spring, Stravinsky's radical sequel to the Firebird. Completed in 1908, Scriabin's Poem of Ecstasy makes such an instructive companion on disc that it is surprising to find the pairing is almost unique. Where Stravinsky uses jarring rhythmic dislocation and his command of an orchestra to paint tableaux in sound of a pagan rite, Scriabin places a no less quintessentially French-Russian harmonic palette in the service of sensual pleasure, building wave upon wave of melodic intensity to crash over the listener and ultimately overwhelm them. Both contrasting styles owe much to the innovations of Debussy, whose rhythmic suppleness in the evocation of wind and water would come to have a profound influence over 20th-century composers in the orchestral seascapes which punctuate his first opera, Peter Grimes. In the years after it's premiere in 1945, Grimes established a place on the world's lyric stages for British opera thanks to the universal power of it's storytelling, not only through the ordinary characters at it's heart, but through the translation of their complex feelings into surging orchestral

Carrara / Guaitoli / Orchestre Lyrique Et Sym - Carrara: Orchestral Works - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Conceived originally as the score for a performance comprising music, text and archive images of legendary cyclists and commissioned in part by the 2013 UCI Road World Championships, the Naples born Cristian Carrara's (b. 1977-)'Suite per Bicicletta e Orchestra' perfectly captures in spirit and title the multiple textures that characterize this collection. Thematically broad, Carrara's melodic, whimsical, and above all gorgeous compositions are of a kind of 'atmospheric' classical strain reminiscent of popular pianist Ludovic Einaudi's works. With the Orchestre Lyrique et Symphonique de Nancy led by Flavio Emilio Scogna.
