Google - Pixel Watch 5 (41mm) - Wi-Fi - Matte Black Case - Obsidian Band - S/L - (2026)

Google has released the Pixel Watch 5. With new features, Gemini integration, an AI backed health coach, just to name a few, this is a good updated model of the Pixel Watch series. In The Box What I got in the box was the Pixel Watch 5, watch band, and charging dock. The notch side of the watch band has two sizes to accommodate anyone. It to me a few seconds to see how the band connects to the watch, but after that, I got each side connected. Setup Setup was very straightforward. It didn’t take long to get up and running. The prompts were simple and easy to follow. Google Pay, Gemini, and the health app were easy to setup. I didn’t run into any problems with setting up the watch or any of it’s features. Configuration is also streamlined to be simple. Features Google Pay is nice to have. It keeps me from having to take my phone out of my pocket to use it at the store. Gemini worked flawlessly. Add in the gesture feature, that allows me to raise my arm and turn my wrist toward me and say Hey Google to activate the assistant, simplifies the use of the assistant. I have to admit that this is, to me, the best feature of the watch. I can use this without having to take my phone out of my pocket and the voice interface through the watch works really well. The speaker on the watch is clear, so I’m able to hear the assistant’s responses clearly. I have also paired my Bluetooth earbuds with it, so I can hear the assistant’s responses through those when I’m out walking or jogging. The integration with the Health app is a plus and I would say my second best feature. The Health keeps track of so many metrics. Sleep, heart rate, exercises, SPo2, calories burned, and many others. Google has integrated an AI (Gemini) backed health coach. This was a great idea by Google and it works really well. I typically walk to my grocery store, so I use the watch to track the walk. The thing is that when I stop walking and I’m waiting in line to check out, the watch automatically sees this as the end of the walk. When I finish checking out, and begin the second half of the walk, it logs it as a second walk exercise. The health coach though saw this as one and merged the walks together automatically. It also noticed that the second half of the walk involved a higher heart rate so it asked me what was the cause of the pause and the slightly increased heart rate on the second half of the walk. I pointed out the reason for the pause and that the second half of the walk involved me carrying multiple bags of groceries in each hand. The equivalent of carrying a 6-8 lb. dumbbell in each hand on the second leg of the walk. It understood what that ment and suggested a few stretches to unwind from that. The health coach also has made suggestions to help me get to sleep sooner and to help get more restorative sleep. I has helped a lot and I really like it. The battery life is ok. I can get 1.5 days of battery life out of it. It would be nice to see 3+ days, but I have the 41mm sized version, so the battery can’t be very big. The next size up likely has a larger battery and may last a little longer. The charge cradle that comes with it allows me to set the watch on it’s side while charging. It keeps the watch face vertical so I can see the time on the watch face while it is charging. I like that. My other smart watches I have to lay down horizontal which doesn’t allow me to see the watch face. Google thought the cradle through when designing it. Charging the Pixel Watch is fast. Two contacts on the cradle touch two contacts on the watch. It allows for reducing the amount of time it takes to charge up to 100%. Final Thoughts This is a good addition to Google’s line of watches. They have stepped it up with this version. I like the direction Google is going with the Pixel Watch 5. If you are looking for a smart watch that also allows for the easy use of an AI assistant and tracks a tremendous number of health metrics with an AI backed health coach, then consider the Google Pixel Watch 5.

The Pixel Watch 5 is the best digital watch I have owned, and I have had digital watches from several brands. The colors are bright and fantastic. The install is sure-fire and simple. I chose the smaller 41 mm instead of the 45 mm size which is perfect for me. It comes with 2 lengths of band, and the larger length was my best fit. The designers at Google came up with a unique and excellent method to hook the two parts of the band to the watch. The band is also very easy to put on and take off my wrist. Basically, you install the Pixel Watch app, or this app may already be on your Pixel phone. Next the app will walk you through the pairing with your phone and help you through any customization you prefer. Customization could include pairing with the Google Health app. This app had been connected to another device but during the pairing the app simply removed the other device. I’m using my new Pixel Watch during gym workouts and whenever walking. It counts my steps and shows me my heart rate. I’ve chosen a watch face that shows the time digitally as well as the day and date plus my steps and heart rate. Everything is shown very clearly. You can choose an analog face or a simpler digital face; it is fun to switch watch faces. Everything works properly whether it is a physical button, electronics or the touch screen or the app. A big tip of the cap to the engineers at Google Pixel Watch for a wonderful and error-free product that is integrated perfectly with the app and your Pixel phone. I did choose some added watch faces and the process to add watch faces via the app is also flawless. Note that some watch faces will have a nominal cost but there are plenty of beautiful and functional watch faces that are free. I am very pleased with this watch and would highly recommend it.

First, If you've never had a smart watch, there is a steep learning curve. I'm still learning about this watch after nearly a week of use. This is replacing a Fitbit air I tried, but really missed having a watch to see the time. Basic setup is easy and the watch will prompt you. I've got a pixel 10 Pro XL phone, so those with other branded phones may have a different experience. It syncs to the Google Health app pretty well. Caveat- Google health requires a subscription for premium feature and full use. The basic version is OK useful. I almost dropped a star because of this. The screen is bright and easy to see. With time I'll learn all about it and what this watch can do. It's been great for sleep tracking, and such. Some cons- Screen scratches easily. If you're hard on watches like I am, get a screen protector or cover. The Band- 2 sizes to fit you. It's soft and pliable. However, it's not comfortable for me, nor is it breathable. Aftermarket options exist. Battery life- Only about 36-40 hours. It does recharge fast. No owners manual. Like a lot of older people I HATE QR codes for manuals.That's made it a pain to learn about all the functionality of this watch. Maybe a link to some dedicated tutorial vids would be better for those of us that learn differently. If I had it to do over, I'd get the LTE version. But the wifi version is cool. Can still get notifications and phone calls (Sound isn't great). All in all, I'd highly recommend this smart watch. Just take time to learn about it.

NOTE: If you’re planning to get a Pixel Watch, I highly recommend choosing the LTE model (not the one being reviewed here). Being able to call emergency services from your watch, even without an active service plan (at least that’s how it works here in the USA), gives peace of mind that is well worth the 10% increase in cost (with current pricing). This feature has helped save many lives. ===[ Pros ]=== - Premium, strong, durable build quality. - The fitness tracking is accurate, responsive, and presented in a meaningful way. - The display is highly configurable, with a wide range of styles and lots of useful widgets (called “complications”). It’s bright and very usable outside in daylight. - It has tight integration with the Google Home ecosystem, allowing adjustment of a Nest Thermostat, viewing a Nest doorbell or security camera feed, finding a misplaced device (like a phone or earbuds), etc. - It comes preloaded with many useful apps, and the Google Play Store opens up the possibilities even further, in ways you might not expect. It’s pretty cool being able to use your watch as a remote control for your smart TV or video streaming device, for example. - Provides very convenient access to the Gemini assistant. Besides all the new-fangled chatbotiness, it provides an alternative interface to navigating the phone, such as launching apps or voice transcription for text input instead of using the tiny on-screen keyboard. ===[ Cons ]=== - The bottom surface, which houses the health sensor array, has a very significant curve which can create an uncomfortable pressure point. I find this to be particularly bothersome while sleeping. - The built-in speaker is terribly anemic. It’s somewhat serviceable in a very quiet room, but I personally avoid audio-producing activity. This also makes the Gemini assistant less useful, among other things. - The skin temperature and blood oxygen sensors are locked to sleep monitoring; live data is not available. Some competing products are less restrictive with this sensor data. - The charging cradle does not have a detachable cable. This makes it more cumbersome for travel, and if the cord gets damaged, then the entire cradle has to be replaced. ===[ The Longevity Problem ]=== A ‘smart’ device connected to my most essential account on the interwebs becomes e-waste the instant it loses access to security updates. Continuing to use it past then invites unnecessary problems. All generations of Pixel watches up to the current generation have a guaranteed three-year support lifetime for software and security updates (starting at the time of initial release). The first-generation Pixel Watch is the only generation to be living past this guaranteed period, and it received its last update the same month it crossed the three-year threshold, about a year ago. The precedent is set, and I have no faith Google will become more generous with its later-generation models. It’s a shame, because the battery life of my first-gen Pixel Watch has held up very well. Security/software updates aside, it’s still a very usable device. For context, the most recent Apple Watch security update was released this past July and was made available to the Series 6 and later. The Series 6 was released six years ago, to the month. Google’s security and software update guarantee for the latest Pixel Phone generation (11, and down through the Pixel 8) is seven years. In comparison, three years doesn’t seem very generous. Google made very significant updates to the Pixel Watch with the 2nd and 3rd generations. There was a significant slowdown with the 4th gen, and now the 5th gen seems mostly designed to maintain the status quo. The Pixel Watch seems to be right where Google wants it. If this holds for future models, this planned obsolescence ‘tax’ will start to really sting. ===[ Other Considerations ]=== - The battery is OK. A charge lasts all day, including sleep, with always-on display enabled. This can be stretched to two days, depending on settings and activity. It works well enough for my purposes, but since some competing products can last significantly longer on a charge, this doesn’t earn ‘pro’ status. Battery life held up well with the previous generation models, and I expect the same from this generation. - I really like the included bands, but they’re proprietary. The watch doesn’t work with common lug-based bands unless you can find an adapter. - The Google Health Coach, available through a Google Health Premium paid subscription, is a mixed bag. Its automatic assessments and ‘proactive messaging’ seemed like hot garbage; I did not find them useful. Most interesting to me was the ability to ask specific questions about my recorded stats, especially trends, and get meaningful responses. This can be more convenient and more insightful than scrolling through pages of stats in the Health app.
