Reckoning is essentially an acoustic companion to Dead Set, a 1981 live album of electric material - both albums were recorded at the same run of concerts. - The material recorded in 1980 was originally intended for on one double LP set, but the of the music subsequently steered the Grateful Dead towards the of two double albums, Reckoning and Dead Set. Following the band's tour in support of their 1982 live album Three Sides Live, Genesis took an eight-month break before starting work on a new studio album. It marks their first written, recorded, and mixed in it's entirety at their own recording facility, The Farm. It's title derives from the fact that each track was written as a group.
