The music of Will Griffith's The Great Dying is a mix he likes to call dark country. He grew up in Cleveland, Mississippi, where D.I.Y. punk house shows hooked him, and his early bands played The Farmhouse and legendary delta juke joint Po' Monkey's. Songs from The Great Dying's new album, A Constant Goodbye, were born from playing hundreds of shows supporting Bloody Noses & Roses (Dial Back Sound 2018), and it continues where the debut left off. The ballads are still sweet and menaced, the rockers are still hair-raisers, but the new record pushes in new directions, infusing sounds of classic country with faint traces of The Replacements and what was once called Inchalternative rock.Inch The tracks are layered and varied wall-of-sound arrangements grind against flange-bass and fiddle, with Griffith's barebones acoustic guitar and vocals at the root, and heartbreak all over. Lost & Profound are the Canadian duo, also husband and wife team of writer/producer Terry Tompkins and singer/composer Lisa Boudreau. Goodbye Mine -their 5th album and first in over a decade, was recorded at Toronto's Revolution Studios and was engineered by Dean Nelson, best known for his work with Beck, and mixed by Grammy award winning engineer, Oz Fritz whose resume includes The Ramones, Tom Waits, Bob Marley and John Cale. Tompkins is a well-known composer producer and founder of award winning sound design company The Eggplant Collective. Goodbye Mine, blends sounds from different musical genres such as folk, rock and sunshine pop. Boudreau's vocals are reminiscent of Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval and PJ Harvey. Debut follow-up albums have a dreaded reputation for falling short of their predecessors. The Essex Green bucked the odds and delivered a masterwork with The Long Goodbye in 2003. The band's core trio of Sasha Bell, Jeff Baron, and Chris Ziter were fresh out of the influential Elephant 6 stables with their stunning twin releases, a self-titled extended play and the classic full-length Everything Is Green. Compared to the psychedelic swirl and sunny disposition of Everything Is Green, The Long Goodbye was a mature and incredibly thoughtful endeavor that emphasized the core members' evolution in songwriting and arrangement.
