At time of review, I am about 30 hours into the game.
Graphics:
Pros: Some of the areas are really pretty looking and comparable to a AAA game.
Cons: On the PS4 it does not look great 50% of the time. Lots of pop ins and texture rendering. Facial animations and cutscenes are sometimes painfully bad(think Mass Effect Andromeda).
Story:
Pros: Pretty interesting premise. Not similar to another storyline I can recall ever playing before in an RPG. Lots of the side mission story's play into the main mission story. Several ways to approach missions. Dialogue will change depending on who you bring in your party and can effect your relationship status with party members.
Cons: The poor graphics unfortunately sometimes affect my enjoyment of the story. The camera is super janky when in dialogue scenes(going through people, odd angle on characters faces, no mouth movement, etc). Also, super repetitive dialogue (the natives repeat the same lines over and over at each tribe you visit, and so does your character). There are some fetch quests before you get info out of people-typical RPG stuff.
Gameplay/Combat:
Pros: Several ways to approach missions and how you approach will sometimes be dependent on what skills you are building your character with. Warrior, mage, and a mix of gunslinger/rogue/scientist?, are the general classes, but they all really bleed into one another, and can mix it up. I enjoy the so called boss battles. That is when combat feels the best. Lots of armor and weapons to choose from. Can customize them to an extent.
Cons: Combat is not that fun to me and got old quick, even with the multiple traps, bombs, swords, magic, etc that can be used. Not a variety of enemies; has more to do with armor rating that enemy type. It just does not feel right when connecting with an enemy and sometimes delays. Sneaking around is not enjoyable. Companion AI is not good, and they will die quick.
World/Exploration:
The map and how you explore between areas is similar to Dragon Age: Origins-which may be a pro or con for some people.
Pros: I like that you can move pretty quickly through an area by running-vs. in Dragon Age: Inquistion where it felt like you got nowhere fast. A couple of the cities do look nice(from a distance). Interesting set up that where you can go is dependent upon what attributes you have, but this also falls into a con...
Cons: The exploration is not interesting enough for me to want to go back to areas I was previously unable to due to my attributes (nor do I remember where). Exploring the world can be frustrating; running into invisible walls, not being able to make short hops off areas, but instead having follow the path, then randomly being able hop off another area that is higher up. The only pay off for exploring is finding shrines with a skill point or a random chest (that you may not be able to get into). Most places you find you will probably end up at in another mission, so not a lot of incentive to explore. Minor side missions to find camps and notes on beasts does not feel worth it. The cities are copy and paste, then slap a new skin on it. How you traverse the city changes, but once you step inside a building they are duplicates with new skins from one to next.
Things to Note-Bugs Aplenty:
Serious frame drops during gameplay on occasion and sometimes dialogue scenes freeze. Lots of graphic issues-seriously. I have not had hard crashes or data erased though.
I would recommend as long as you understand this is a AA game and comes with all the issues you could expect from one, and is not going to have the polish. It feels a bit like a PS3 game.
