The composer Arnold Griller (b. 1937), son of the violinist Sidney Griller, grew up in London, surrounded by some of the world's best-known musicians. In spite of this propitious beginning to his career, his considerable output remains largely unknown. This second volume of orchestral pieces presents four major works, one of them Griller's only symphony. His music is highly individual it absorbs a number of disparate influences, not least Milhaud (his main teacher) and late Stravinsky, shows an occasional touch of the surreal and the bizarre, and infuses the result with radiant lyricism, edgy humor and restless energy. The career of Alexander Walker has taken him all over the world. His pioneering recordings for Naxos have been of music by Havergal Brian and Ignaz Waghalter. He works regularly at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and has toured with the Royal Ballet to the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theaters in Russia and throughout the USA. Emin Martirosian, born in Yerevan in 1987, graduated from the Moscow State Conservatoire in 2011 as both cellist and pianist. Since 2001 he has toured actively, both in Russia and abroad the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Moldova, Switzerland, Turkey, and elsewhere.

Derek Scott, born in Birmingham in 1950, has an international reputation as an historian of the British music hall and other forms of light entertainment. But he is an outstanding composer in his own right, his music treading a fine line between a very English whimsy and a profoundly felt and natural response to his (often Celtic) subject matter. These works reveal a master craftsman and natural tunesmith, who manages to unite good humor, unerring technique and deep feeling in music of immediate appeal. His two symphonies - originally written for brass band - embody a return to the formal, Classical clarity of Haydn, though expressed with the satisfyingly beefy textures of the modern orchestra. He lists among his influences Shostakovich and Sibelius and, less predictably, The Beatles and The Kinks.

Leonard Slatkin celebrated his 75th birthday in September 2019. Many of the selections in this program come from a concert given in his honor and are also a tribute to his remarkable musical family, both past and present. Historical recordings include Leonard's cellist mother, Eleanor Aller, being conducted by Korngold in the Haydn concerto and a 1944 broadcast of his father, Felix, as a solo violinist in Brahms. Every piece here has a deeply personal connection for the family. For his composition The Raven, Leonard used Edgar Allan Poe's poem in a work that is Inchalmost like a concerto for speaker and orchestra.Inch
