About this product

The Brook Street Band's enthusiasm for the music of George Frideric Handel shines through on this recording of the nine Violin Sonatas by- or attributed to- the Baroque composer. The ensemble's 10th for Avie compliments it's critically acclaimed and award-winning discography of a wide variety of Handel's chamber music and vocal works. Combining consummate artistry with characteristic research, The Brook Street Band- posing the question 'how many violin sonatas did Handel actually compose?'- offers nine works composed over a span of 40 years, from the German-born Handel's early years honing his style in Italy to his later years as a leading light in London. He composed some and his name has been variously ascribed to others, depending on which was cashing in, perhaps in cahoots with the commercially-minded composer. But who really knows and one could say who cares, with music of such color performed with such passion. InchThese performances have a powerful stamp of authority... Handel himself would have found real cause for celebration.Inch (International Record Review on The Brook Street Band's album of Handel Cello Sonatas) Inch

Quartetto Vanvitelli - Handel: Sonatas for Violin & Basso Continuo - Se in fiorito ameno prato - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Handel's violin sonatas composed in London stretch from the heyday of the Royal Academy of Music's Italian opera productions to his last English oratorios. The original purposes, contexts and performers of the sonatas are unknown only a few survive in autograph manuscripts, and the authorship and instrumentation of pieces preserved in unreliable early printed sources are a confusing mess. Quartetto Vanvitelli invent a narrative that explores the possibilities of emotions, sonorities and connecting tonalities that are offered by several authentic violin sonatas, a few spurious misattributions, quotations from Giulio Cesare in Egitto (1724) and arrangements from several keyboard pieces - a creative vision designed to refract light through the prism of Handel's music.

Handel / Espanol - Trio Sonatas 2 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Under the title I vanni occulti, ensemble Al Ayre Espanol, led by maestro Eduardo Lopez Banzo offers us it's personal vision of Handel's Sonatas Op. 2. The phrase comes from the oratorio Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno (The Triumph of Time and Dillusion, 1707). The reference to this aria is not anecdotal, because Sonata No. 1 in this Op. 2 contains references to this music- an aspect that, hardly surprisingly, constitutes a characteristic element of the composition technique of the maestro from Halle. Over the course of his life, Handel composed 20 trio sonatas, 12 of which were published in London in two different collections six sonatas were published in 1733 as Op. 2 and another seven printed in 1739 as Op. 5. In a disguised allusion to the vanitas allegory and the fleeting passage of time, Al Ayre Espanol presents, just three years after it's recording of Op. 5, an introspective version of Op. 2, which completes and, at the same time, complements the group's first rendition of Handel's trio sonatas. The two recordings form a single project that offers the listener a passionate and impassioned, southern and Mediterranean version of this exquisite chamber music. This version is marked by the emergence, with particular expressive intensity, of the two aesthetic poles present in the chamber music universe of Handel the most contained lyricism combined with the most explosive fury.
