High Roller Records, Los Angeles-based thrash metallers Mindwars are back with their fifth studio album, InchVInch. Originally self-released by the band in early 2024, it now gets it's well-deserved international exposure via High Roller Records. The trio, led by Mike Alvord, guitarist and co-founder of the legendary Holy Terror, along with Italian drummer Roby Vitari and bassist Rick Zaccaro, showcases a blend of classic thrash with a wealth of killer riffs and lyrical depth. Mindwars were founded in 2013, almost 25 years after a chance meeting between Alvord and Vitari in Europe that started a life-long friendship. The band name, of course, refers to Holy Terror's second album InchMind WarsInch (1988), yet the project represents a new chapter for the guitarist. InchI didn't want anyone to think this was a continuation of Holy Terror,Inch he clarifies. InchI always looked at it as an appendage or extension, and it is only natural that there are hints of Holy Terror in our music.Inch With Vitari's relocation to L.A. and the most recent addition of Zaccaro, Mindwars entered a new creative phase. The trio has chiselled their sophomore full-length InchThe DeepeningInch from the same sonic granite that it's predecessor InchVenter pa stormeneInch came from over a decade ago. This bedrock is found in Namsos, where VEMOD were conceived as a lifelong passion project at the turn of the century by then 12-year old Jan Even Asli. The nearest big city is Trondheim where the fiercely individual local Nidrosian black metal scene, which refers to the city's original name, provided VEMOD with it's first point of musical reference as embodied by the first demo InchKringom fjell og skogInch (2004). When the Norwegians reemerged seven years later with both the track InchMoestae QverelaeInch on a split-single and the demo InchVinterildenInch in 2011, they had considerably changed. The trio had taken a step outside by strengthening elements that have already been present before a sprinkle of the majesty reminding of early IN THE WOODS..., a dash of melancholia, and a knife tip of introvert contemplation among a wide range of emotional and vivid sonic imagery. VEMOD's musical transition finds comparable parallels in the development of French brothers-in-spirit ALCEST even though there was no direct influence flowing either way. In hindsight, the Norwegians also pioneered such currently popular styles such as blackgaze and post-black metal, although they never subscribed to either.
