About this product

'Cut You Where You Was' marks the return of saxophonist, flutist, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Henry Threadgill's flagship band Zooid. It's their first since 2021's Poof, which Downbeat asserted Inchvisits strange territories, upsets our sense of scale and value but delivers whole new musical worlds.Inch It also marks the 25th anniversary of their first album Up Popped the Two Lips, the inaugural by Pi Recordings, which was first founded with the inspiration to document new releases from Threadgill. Their new album exhibits the continued growth of Zooid's unique sound. Featuring original members Liberty Ellman on guitar, Jose Davila on trombone and tuba, Elliot Humberto Kavee on drums, and cellist Christopher Hoffman, who has been a member for over a decade and a half, the band exhibits a sense of ease with Threadgill's knotty compositional sense, achieving their signature quality with less strict adherence to the distinctive interval-based compositional system that won Threadgill a Pulitzer Prize for his landmark work In for a Penny, In for a Pound. The album comprises a number of brief pieces that are inspired by Threadgill's fascination with early recording technologies Their short recording durations force each musician to make their statements quickly rather than through protracted development. This limitation helps open new possibilities for musical expression, making Cut You Where You Was another tour-de-force from one of the most important artists of last half-century.

Henry Threadgill Zooid - Poof - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Poof is composer, saxophonist and flutist Henry Threadgill's latest work for his band, Zooid, his musical laboratory for the last two decades. Their last together, In for a Penny, In for a Pound, was the winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Music, whose committee called it Incha highly original work in which notated music and improvisation mesh in a sonic tapestry that seems the very expression of modern American life.Inch The New York Times has called Threadgill a Inchcomposer and bandleader of intense, unyielding originality, nobody's idea of a compromise.Inch At the age of 77, he continues to challenge himself to create music that is pushing the boundaries of what is possible. The new work is the latest in Threadgill's ongoing exploration of compositions and group improvisations based around what he calls Incha serial intervallic language.Inch In this scheme, each musician is assigned a series of intervals on which to improvise, effectively creating an intertwining, polyphonic swirl that encourages each musician to play with an ear for counterpoint. The music often seems teetering on edge and is as knotty and inscrutable as always, but always propelled by an off-kiltered swing that is a consistent hallmark of Threadgill's works.

Henry Threadgill - Old Locks and Irregular Verbs - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Old Locks and Irregular Verbs (CD) Henry Threadgill - With his recent Pulitzer prize for composition still hot in his pocket, Threadgill comes up with another album with his compositions, a tribute to his longtime friend and colleague, musical pioneer Lawrence D. InchButchInch Morris. Threadgill doesn't play a note here, but his presence is felt in the way that Ensemble Double Up, a band with two pianos (Jason Moran and David Virelles), two alto saxophones (Roman Filliu and Curtis McDonald), cello (Christopher Hoffman), tuba 8Jose Davila), and drums (Craig Weinrib), coalesces and comes apart. Despite the fact it doesn't contain a single note of his own searing saxophone playing, Old Locks and Irregular Verbs remains pure Threadgill and a highlight in career stocked with more than a few classics.
