About this product

A storied part of the early 4AD catalog, His Name Is Alive - the creative outlet of Michigan musician Warren Defever - was signed to the tag in 1989, after founder Ivo Watts-Russell fell in love with their dark and fragmented sonic inclinations via cassette demos sent in the post. The project's debut record, Livonia (named after Defever's hometown), was released in June 1990. While His Name Is Alive's sound was in line with the gothic echoes of labelmates Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance, they also had a different, nonpareil quality, something existing on the boundary of this earth and another realm further underground. It was this otherness that piqued interest and proved the fulcrum of an unpredictable sound that often changed tack before listeners could second guess.A product of nearly ten years of Defever's home recordings, produced and mixed by Watts-Russell and his This Mortal Coil collaborator John Fryer, their debut Livonia cemented the band's presence among the 4AD's well-established ethereal lineage, reinventing and refracting the 4AD sound through a prism. A study in shadows, the album examined the dual themes of love and loss, being woozily delivered as if dreamlike. When reissued a few years later in the US, the album's title track was added - a non-linear study in guitar distortion - which completed the record and is a track that now stands out as one of the band's finest moments. Album Tracks 1. As We Could Ever 2. E Nicolle (Introduction) 3. If July 4. Some and I 5. Fossil (Verse) 6. E Nicolle 7. Caroline's Supposed Demon 8. Fossil 9. Reincarnation 10. You and I Have Seizures 11. How Ghosts Affect Relationships 12. Darkest Dreams

Anjimile - The King - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

If Giver Taker was an album of prayers, The King is an album of curses. Anjimile won the world over with the clear-eyed honesty of their first record - a meditation on spirituality and liberation. In 2019 he recorded Giver Taker, a collection of songs written while getting sober in Florida. Giver Taker was critically adored - Rolling Stone Magazine deemed it one of the best 50 albums of 2020. Since Giver Taker's , Anjimile tested new material on the road while opening for artists like Jose Gonzalez, Tune-Yards, and Hurray for the Riff Raff. In his sophomore album, The King, he continues exploring what it means to be a Black trans person in America. The brutally honest reflection of 2020's deadly summer is less reminiscent of the pink cloud of early sobriety and more rooted in the reality of seeing brutality with clear eyes.1. The King 2. His Name Is Alive - Home Is In Your Head - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The band's second album with 4AD, recorded in Warren Defever's home studio and remixed by Ivo Watts-Russell and John Fryer (as with their debut), sees 23 songs quick-firing through emotions, with moments of soothing calm soon clashing with white noise and visceral chaos. Highlights include InchHer Eyes Were HugeInch, on which lightly strummed acoustic guitar uplift Karin Oliver's swooning, gossamer drawl; the synth-led, inquisitive and prickly InchAre We Still Married?Inch; and pensive instrumental waltz InchSiting Still Moving Still Staring OutlookingInch. A varied yet grounded compilation of new material and old (some dating back to Defever's junior high days), it finds the band entering a confident creative stride, leaving listeners enthralled by both it's beauty and darkness and proving Defever's inspired productions utterly unique. InchDark, disturbing, and beautiful [...] Held together by Warren Defever's artful production, it's 23 songs range from jealous contemplation to spiritual concerns, from gentle folk to white noise guitar outbursts. Karin Oliver's supple voice lends itself to an array of musical and emotional settings.Inch - AllMusic Album Tracks 1. Are You Comin' Down This Weekend? 2. Her Eyes Were Huge Things 3. The Charmer 4. His Name Is Alive - Mouth By Mouth - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

His Name Is Alive's final record on 4AD, the first where the band controlled all processes including mixing, saw a marked shift; their most diverse, yet accessible catalog entry. The project's soaring growth over time allowed Defever to employ an extraordinarily adventuring approach to the record's sound and vision, indulging his love for all kinds of music, be it tastes of looped dub (InchLord, Make Me A Channel of Your PeaceInch, InchThe Homesick WaltzInch), sugar-sweet 1960s pop (InchBaby Fish MouthInch, InchLipInch), distortion-laden dream-gaze (InchCan't Go Wrong Without YouInch), evocative alt-noise (InchSickInch), or strummy folk (InchWhere Knock Is Open WideInch). Embracing the surreal and turning their experimentalism up a notch and with Defever's studio skills truly blossoming, many see this as a high point for the band. InchLike a DIY cocktail of My Bloody Valentine's dreamy noise and the wee-hours arthouse sigh of fellow 4AD'ers This Mortal Coil, [Mouth By Mouth] generates a tremolo- and fuzz-laden frenzy underscoring Defever's debt to '60s garage psych.Inch - Bandcamp Daily Album Tracks 1. Baby Fish Mouth 2. Lip 3. Cornfield 4. In Every Ford 5. Lord, Make Me a Channel of Your Peace 6. Drink, Dress, and Ink 7. Where Knock Is Open Wide 8. Can't Go Wrong Without You 9. Jack Rabbits 10. Sort of 11. Sick 12. Blue Moon 13. Ear 14. Lemon Ocean 15. The Torso 16. The Dirt Eaters
