Songwriter and bandleader M.C. Taylor's music is at once familiar, yet impossible to categorize Elements from the American songbook-the steady, churning acoustic guitar and mandolin, the gospel emotion, the eerie steel guitar tracings, the bobbing and weaving organ and electric piano-provide the bedrock for Taylor's existential ruminations about parenthood, joy, hope, and loneliness-our delicate, tightrope balance of dark and light-that offer fully engaged contemporary commentary on the present. I wanted where we recorded it to mirror the searching spirit of the music.Inch Having written upwards of 40 songs-in motel rooms, his studio in North Carolina, and a secluded cottage outside of Charlottesville, Virginia-Taylor winnowed them down to the ten works that comprise Terms of Surrender. With regular collaborators-including Phil and Brad Cook, Josh Kaufman, and Matt McCaughan-and new friends like Jenny Lewis and Aaron Dessner (of The National), the crew decamped to Dessner's Long Pond studio in upstate New York, Sound City in Los Angeles, and producer Roger Moutenot's Haptown studio in Nashville to create the most fully realized and genre-defying Hiss Golden Messenger album to date. Vinyl LP pressing housed in a heavyweight jacket with a debossed cover. The remastered reissue of the classic Hiss Golden Messenger album features brand-new artwork designed in close collaboration between M.C. Taylor and artist Sam Smith, along with newly penned liner notes by Amanda Petrusich (The New Yorker). This is part of the limited-edition deluxe Hiss box set titled Devotion Songs About Rivers and Spirits and Children which also includes remastered reissues of Bad Debt and Poor Moon as well as Virgo Fool, a bonus album of Hiss rarities physically available only with the box set.
Vinyl LP pressing includes digital download. Hiss Golden Messenger return on Merge Records in October 2016 with their sixth full-length album Heart Like a Levee. The eleven songs on Heart Like a Levee are immediate, dealing with themes that include leaving and returning, belief and trust, guilt, honesty, and life on the road. Hiss Golden Messenger creative force M.C. Taylor says, InchI wrote these songs during a time of transition and doubt. The process was raw, but also joyous. I spent a lot of time with these words and chords in all types of weather. In the end I learned more about myself making this record than any in the past, and that's one important way for me to gauge whether an album was worth making. I want to make records that feel both minor- and major-key at the same time; maybe 'bittersweet' is a good word for it. Life is simultaneously happy and sad at once, and that's how I want my records to feel. I think that's how Heart Like a Levee feels.Inch The highly anticipated was self-produced by Taylor and Bradley Cook and recorded in Durham, NC, with Taylor's close-knit North Carolina collaborators brothers Phil and Bradley Cook on piano and bass, respectively;Matt McCaughan on drums; Tift Merritt and Alexandra Sauser-Monnig on backing vocals; and Matt Douglas and Michael Lewis on horns. Matching up kindred spirits and mutual influences, this volume of Three Lobed Recording's Parallelogram series collects 2015 recordings from Hiss Golden Messenger and Michael Chapman. Both M.C. Taylor (Hiss Golden Messenger) and Michael Chapman have consistently won praise for possessing a certain songwriting prowess and earnest delivery. This LP only helps both artists cement their reputations. He Parallelogram collection originated in the particular magic that comes from finding the InchrightInch musical pairing. We've all experienced the perfect song at the perfect time and know how electrifying it can be. The set and setting that combine to make those jukebox choices, mix tapes, or playlists really work can be so hard to define, but easy to identify once they are out there in the wild.
