About this product

SOMM RECORDINGS is pleased to announce Entente Musicale, a celebration of Anglo-French music from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries that sees violinist Clare Howick and pianist Simon Callaghan return to the tag following their well-received collection of British Violin Sonatas. Perhaps no composer embodied the new spirit of comradeship and collaboration between England and France more enthusiastically than the Bradford-born, Paris-domiciled Frederick Delius. His Sonata in B major offers a becoming portrait of the then 30-year-old composer; youthfully dramatic with a growing virtuosity and vigor that makes it seem, as Robert Matthew-Walker notes in his erudite booklet notes, like the Inchextended and manifestly symphonic compositionInch it is. Composed at the same age, John Ireland's breakthrough First Violin Sonata combines Edwardian elegance with a hint of French Impressionism gleaned from Debussy - whose late, last Violin Sonata in G minor is a work of profoundly-expressed emotions - and Ravel, whose Pièce en forme de habanera is hauntingly memorable. While resident in Paris in the early years of the last century, Cyril Scott enjoyed cordial relations with Ravel and Debussy, who particularly admired his music. His Valse Caprice and arrangement of Cherry Ripe infuse well-mannered salon pieces with lithe French elegance. Similarly so, Arnold Bax's ever-popular picture-postcard Mediterranean in it's vivacious arrangement by Jascha Heifetz.

Simon Callaghan - Complete Piano Music - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

In his obituary of William Busch, the writer and broadcaster John Amis observed that 'His music is distinguished by it's sensibility and warmth with a strong sense of form and a fine texture, linear rather than harmonic. It is tragic that he should have died when he was writing at the height of his powers and at a time when his gifts were beginning to receive recognition. Recognition will not cease now, for his work has permanent values'. Over forty year later, in a series of radio programs entitled 'Forgotten Reputations', Amis warned that 'Of all the musicians of the '30s and '40s... William Busch is the most likely to be forgotten'. The current preserves an important part of his creative legacy and seeks to ensure that his music lives on. Though some of Rebecca Clarke's most successful pieces feature the piano, such as her Viola Sonata (1919) and Piano Trio (1921) and her writing for the instrument in those scores is both idiomatic and inventive, she only wrote a handful of solo piano pieces, all featured on this .

Callaghan Takenouchi - Arrangements for 2 Pianos 3 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Given the 'romantic' nature of these two sonatas, Saint-Saëns could have been forgiven for producing two-piano versions that treated the originals as bases for his own imaginings. In fact, as far as a fourth party can judge, he has been scrupulous in respecting the composers' intentions. Wherever either piano is playing on it's own, it plays the original text. Beyond that, of course, are the host of more complex textures where Saint-Saëns has felt free to add notes for extra emphasis. Perhaps the most satisfying admixture of color comes in the Chopin Funeral March, where extra low octaves in the bass boom like the beating of a bass drum. But throughout, the relative, new-found simplicity of each piano part allows performers to phrase more subtly. No doubt Liszt had these points in mind when he considered making such a transcription of his sonata, alas never realized. But he greatly admired Saint-Saëns as both composer and pianist, and one cannot but imagine he would have approved his fine arrangement. (Roger Nichols)
