I have been looking for a laptop that could compete with my Helios 300 for the price, and man have I found it! It's slightly more expensive, however, it's also an 8core/16 thread CPU. Here are my thoughts: Packaging- Pretty standard box, laptop comes wrapped in a plastic sheet with the power supply in a small compartment next to it and the usual manuals and warranty card. Nothing exciting or flashy here. Thermals- This laptop's cooling system is phenomenal. I have been playing Far Cry 5, max settings, 60fps+ and the highest temp it reached was 90c on the CPU, and 74c on the GPU. Dying Light max settings 75c on CPU and 72c on GPU. I am absolutely shocked by these temps, my Helios which has the 9750h/1660ti configuration AFTER repasting with coolermaster maker pro, STILL reaches 97c-99c on CPU playing just World of Warcraft(which by the way stays at high 70s on CPU on this laptop) I did run AIDA64 on max fan settings and the CPU did hit 103c, which was rather scary, after much digging around, I found out that it's an AMD boost clock issue, and can be easily fixed by disabling the boost clock. There are plenty of videos on youtube on how to do this. Now I understand most people want something that works out of the box and trust me, this does perfectly. You'll never reach those high temps under normal circumstances unless you buy a laptop just for stress testing 24/7 ;p . By the way, the fans are whisper quiet, max fan settings are a little loud but not distracting. Screen- The screen is 144hz, not sure about the ms because HP does not disclose it. This particular model has Freesync(40-60hz range), you need to enable it as it's disabled by default. My panel doesn't have backlight bleed or glow but that varies from panel to panel. Battery- I use it plugged in as it doesn't make much sense to game on battery. Keyboard- The keyboard is phenomenal. It has 4 zone RGB. They keys feel nice when pressed and there's a satisfying feedback. They don't feel mushy at all like a certain competitor with the G and a number 14. >_> The lighting is also perfect and uniform. It doesn't have a side numeral keypad, but that's not a huge deal for me. It has a dedicated key for the Omen Command Center software which is pretty neat. The power button is interestingly located next to the F12 key and in between a delete key. There's a little section on the side with the insert key/home/pg up/down/pause/end/print etc.(one key for a calculator shortcut o.O I actually like this one) Software- It doesn't come with a ton of bloatware, just the usual suspect, vpn, mcafee(dear God), dropbox and some HP software. I normally get rid of the OEM software but these are pretty useful, you can update the drivers/bios etc. It also comes with OMEN Command Center, this thing is pretty neat. You can control the RGB keyboard through here, manage fan profiles. Overclock the system, keep an eye on vitals such as temps/utilization etc. It also has a pretty neat rewards tab that gives you rewards for literally just playing games. Think sweepstakes or $5 BK gift cards etc for things such as playing Call of Duty for 30mins. Speakers- The speakers on this thing are beastly. Uses Bang & Olufsen speakers, the sound is perfect. It's pretty loud and fills a small room. Upgradeability- 8 screws to remove bottom panel, (4 big screws on the back, 4 small on the front). You can use a guitar pick to undo the latches on the edges and remove the bottom panel. Here you have 2 sticks of DDR4 3200mhz RAM. Not soldered from what I saw(yay:D) Your wifi 6 module, battery and 2 nvme slots(which by the way, they each come with their shields to prevent overheating!) Port Selection- 4 USB ports in total. 3 USB Type 3.1 type A ports(1 on left side, 2 on right side towards the side of the screen) 1 USB Type 3.1 type C port 1 HDMI Port 1 Headphone jack 1 Mini display port 1 SD card reader Overall build quality- Build quality is pretty good. It's a budget laptop and that reflects on the material. Not that it looks cheap or anything, but it uses a lot of plastic. Lid, bottom cover, palm rest are plastic, keyboard area is aluminum. You're not getting CNC aluminum for the price here. It looks and feels very nice. Speaking of the lid the logo is different and more subtle now. Very minimalist. By the way, the color is supposed to be Mica Silver, but it's closer to a light shade of black than silver. -Conclusion This year there's plenty of good laptops out there, there are several offerings from intel and AMD. This one's a pretty solid one, I'm surprised it's not getting more press. I've already went through several other mainstream brands and they've been nothing but trouble, whether it's a mushy keyboard with pretty bad back light and a screen that randomly goes black, or a device that you could fry an egg on top because the temps are outrageous and the fans sound like jet engines. I think this one is a pretty good compromise between price and performance. The 1660ti is a very capable GPU, please don't think that because it's not some 2070 super or 2080 you won't be getting awesome frames because it's simply not true. You're missing out on raytracing which is honestly overrated, that's it. Thanks for reading and if you do buy this one, I hope you enjoy it!

Impressed so far with this laptop's performance both for work, media consumption and most specially for gaming. Now this isn't a top-end tier performance beast by any means but it does comes close. This is a no brainer at its price point...basically your per-dollar to performance/specs ratio pans out better with this laptop. And having gotten it myself on-sale at $950+tax, it makes my MBPro look like a massive ripoff lol! I'm slowly rediscovering my 11 year old Steam library and adding more as I browse along...all while waiting for PS5 to be firmly in stock. Would I recommend this? Heck yeah! But...PS: be prepared managing a giant grill that may suck in more than just dust, expect to maybe get hurt by the corners that are a tad too sharp for a modern laptop and bear in mind that battery life on the go could be better(abt 2-3 hours with high settings/graphics galore gaming, abt 5-6 hours watching or maybe 7-8 hrs working with it)...I don't mind that part as I don't game on the go, not that we can normally go anywhere these days I know, but I use it while constantly plugged in the way computers are meant to be to begin with...also be ready to be confounded with a weird design choice by HP werein they either forgot to put rubber or plastic lips where the screen touches body when the lid is closed or they just wanted to have the design and construction the way it is as aforementioned(shrug).

I loved my time with this laptop. This is the first time I have had a GPU substantial for heavy games. The fans offer minimal control, with a max and auto setting but it is still very noisy. In the Omen Control Center, there are also "Casual" "Balanced" and "Performance" options to choose from. Choosing the causal tasks settings with the auto fan option, and only doing minimal tasks such as Microsoft Word and Adobe, the fan is still quite noisy. However the temperatures do stay low and this computer is really fast. Nonetheless, I cannot give this an in-depth review, as I have encountered a Smart Disk Error after using this for about 2 weeks. I then had to send my laptop back. I am not sure how common this may be but it came at a very inconvenient time with classes starting back up. Despite my short time with it and this error, I would recommend it (if this error had not occurred).

Just look at that keyboard! The home and page up page down delete and insert are exactly like a full size keyboard. Perfect if you like gaming but also want to be productive on it during the day! I also Shrunk the main drive down by 100 GB and was effortlessly able to install Ubuntu 20.04 without any issue whatsoever, worked first try so awesome. So now have a full dual boot system for gaming and productivity

I had been hooked on Apple computers since 2000. I went to college for media productions and editing. No doubt Apple delivers a seamless experience between the user and the software. A year and a half ago I went to Best Buy to purchase a new Apple desktop for video editing and with an open mind and spec comparisons I saw just how much more computing power you get for you’re dollar. So I bought the Omen desk top with a sweet Samsung 32 inch 4K monitor and for fun the Oculus Vr cause I could.. Most amazing, I still saved $$! So given it was the end of summer, I really wanted to edit my videos on my porch in the mornings. So It was the easiest decision I have ever made. I knew this was the laptop for me. It delivers power, fun custom lit up keys and a great battery life. I can not recommend this laptop enough! It dose not look like a typical gaming laptop, and packs a slim look. If you are even considering this laptop then consider no more! This is right for you!

I absolutely love this laptop! Had been addicted to the Google ecosystem for the longest so I stepped away from "traditional" PCs. All that changed as I recently dove back into gaming. I didn't want to lose the itch so I searched for a nice entry level to mid range gaming laptop. Most gaming laptops were too pricey, too gamer looking, and not for me as I was looking for something right there in the middle. The Omen has not let me down. It has ports for all my plug-ins(even an SD card slot), speakers aren't terrible, and runs all the games I need. Thought I would need something with the latest and greatest GPU(2080, 3060) to get max enjoyment, but this one(1660 Ti) serves just fine. I'm sure I watched every spec and comparison video before deciding to purchase. There are plenty of them and most gave this setup great reviews. Some will mention flimsy laptop screen as a con, but it hasn't been an issue for me because I don't sit encyclopedias on top of my laptops. Fan seems to blow hardest during intense gaming with charger plugged in, nice and calm during regular usage or light gaming with no charger. I really love the subdued look of the laptop as I travel for work and would need to use it in professional settings. Did I mention upgradability?! On top of whats provided, you can add more RAM and storage when you feel its necessary. I can honestly say I'm satisfied with my purchase and happy to be a part of the HP family again.

Operational User Test of HP OMEN Model:15-EN0023DX Summary report: Product meets or exceeds described functions. Detailed results: This unit was able to display 4K video through the mini DP, HDMI, and USB C ports as well as play 4K games that required advanced processors and Video cards. Noticed that when I set my display to full 4K with an external monitor for both displays I still had a display on the Omen. Interesting! Could be an auto default setting. No lag time in playing mode sequences was observed. XBOX controller in BT mode worked perfect. With PC games, you may have to open Task Manager to close the game. This is a windows game issue and not any hardware issue. BT 5.0 worked as advertised as well as the intel AX200 WIFI-6. The 1 GB NVME M.2 2230 long stick is a high end quality German designed/made in Korea SSD (specs in the follow on section). 1080P display was clear and had no lags in fast action sequences. Programs ran without issues and transfer speeds were significantly faster than the other units tested. Be advised that advertised transfer speeds are only for specially designed hardware to accommodate those speeds in the appropriate environment. Most transfer speeds were in the range of 117-200 MBPS for connected equipment with correct specifications. Internet download speeds were checked and clocked 117 MBPS which is past the limit of my paid service. BT 5.0 will only transfer files if you have the proper files and equipment to do the transfer. Testing BT 5.0 transfer file rates are observed only with no specific measurements. Music files played without issue. Also, iPhone will not transfer files via BT direct to a Windows computer. Discovered that the Microsoft Edge app for iPhone will sync and download your files over the internet. Range of BT 5.0 is around 120 feet through two concrete walls and 250 feet line of site. Lossless music files, two BT 5.0 headphones, and a remote speaker were used for test (5.0 can connect to more than one BT device at a time). Observed program usage of this unit in only one area is very slightly slower than on my other HP and significantly faster in all other areas (games and Office programs the Omen was the leader hands down). Build quality is a significant factor in overall performance of this unit as transfer speeds from external USB drives are significantly faster. 8 core functionalities may be an important feature for setups that required above 6 core setups (virtual servers). I read all the CPU test results and they all say that the 4800H is faster in most areas than almost all the CPUs on the market. I ran the Linksys router speed check and is was faster running the actual program on another HP than the Omen. Even connected the Omen to a Lan cable and got the same results (download and upload speeds were the same). BTW all Microsoft Office programs were significantly faster on the Omen. This is not a scientific observation but just one user observation. Lots of variables in testing actual program processing speed in a real word environment. Bottom line is the quality of the Omen is outstanding in every area (and obviously built to excel in gamming with the dedicated gaming video card. Battery life was around 4.3 hours of heavy use, 8 hours of mixed use, and several days of occasional use with auto sleep and shutdown enabled. 2 hours or less for a full recharge from a 0% battery. Case was aluminum with a plastic display mount. Case was removed. 8 screws on the bottom with snaps holding it in place. Small plastic case separator and micro flat tip screwdriver were used to remove the case. Videos are in the links for tear downs on YouTube. The Wi-Fi M.2 card will be a little harder to R&R due to location under a cooling vent tube. NVME M.2 drives and memory sticks should be easy to do for most experienced users. Battery is user replaceable! Display plastic surround need to be stiffer (flexing could be an issue). Test process: Computer was set up with all Windows 10 and HP updates completed (only Defender activated). Version 2 of the FW was installed. HP update software that came with the unit was used for scans and updates (Very useful tool-be sure to install this one). Additional software (other than authorized games) was not installed until test was completed. Drive was cloned before testing began on an ADATA 1 TB 800 with EZ GIG cable, adapter, and software. In the process of acquiring a second M.2 NVME 2280 drive. This unit does not have slots for the old 2.5” SSD format. Two M.2 NVME long drive slots (PCIe 3.0 x 4 NVME high speed interface) are used with one empty slot. PCIe 4.0 is only available for desktop MOBOs. This unit is configured robustly out of the box. Full clean of C: drive was done before start of test as well as defrag completely disabled. Microsoft full office was installed after the test. Then game software was downloaded from a secure site at XBOX and Microsoft to finish the game part of the test (disks were used from my stack that were dual mode capable). You can go into settings and customize this but to me it easier to disable it during set up. You can always turn it on later and only upload select files if you need that function. Run a clean mean machine when you can. Don't run 2 antivirus.

I'm using it for music production at the moment with windows 10. Using with 2 SSD's but am noticing some latency in choosing between presets (Kontakt, Omnisphere, etc). Going to debug running processes and see what might be causing the lags. Besides music production, games run fast and fluid. Update coming soon.

Bought this laptop to scratch that itch I had for pc gaming and to replace a very dated MacBook Air from 2015. This thing is a BEAST. Runs most of the games I’ve thrown at it amazingly. It does get pretty loud at times when gaming but I always use headphones so it hasn’t taken away from the experience at all. Cyberpunk, warzone, you name it. This Omen can run it. Build quality is top notch. Premium materials were used and it shows. 2 things though. -Keyboard is great in terms of feel although the RGB bleeds through the side of a few keys on mine. Could’ve just gotten unlucky there. -Sound quality out of the built in speakers have virtually no bass. Treble is okay. All in all I do recommend this system. It’s a sleek looking laptop that you can use for work, school, writing reviews and more!

This laptop is absolutely fantastic and perfect, performance, design, quality, and everything is fine. Superior performance with vivid, rich color and resolution... Using this laptop gives me pleasure.

My Boss at work surprised me with this amazing gaming Laptop. I work in the IT department and my boss know how much of a huge gamer I am and how much I love to stream gameplay on my YouTube channel. He called me into the office and told me you see that right there on my desk, take it, it’s yours. I’m like WHAT! He said we had this laying around in the storage room for a few months. I was shocked and told him thank you I appreciate it. Anyways, I been on this laptop for a month now and I must say this HP Omen amazing i do my work on the laptop, I game on it using Xbox game pass and I haven’t ran into any issue as of yet.

For my first gaming laptop i wasn't sure what to expect. This thing is extremely fast to turn on and boot (like 3 or 4 seconds), has an extra slot for a second nvme, transfers between those two nvmes are astounding, the sound is great. The only things i could say are not the best are the hinges, which make me feel the screen will break, and the fans but those i can't blame. It only uses them for heavy games like Cyberpunk and FFXV, which it will run best plugged in because (again) they are very heavy games.

Legitimately the best bang for your buck laptop out there. Many other laptops are the specs but forget to add the build quality and reliability. This laptop is good for anything you throw at it. VR-gaming is ready on setup and the omen services are plentiful. You can even stream games to and from your phone. The keyboard is a lacking with rgb as there are only 4 sectors for lighting, but the customization is still there. The engraving of "015" is a really nice touch

I have been looking for a new laptop for a while now. I had several must haves on my list. I needed a machine that was fast and I wanted it to be quiet. I wanted it to have a backlit keyboard and a larger SSD. I needed a larger amount of memory too. The laptop also needed to be suitable for gaming. The HP Omen Laptop met all of my needs. Out of the box, I plugged it in to set it up. It came nearly fully charged. Set up was easy. It runs on Windows 10. When I turned it on, it booted up in seconds and ran quietly. My previous laptop took several minutes. Depending on the user’s height, and/or the height of their chair, you may have your wrists pressed into the front of the laptop. HP’s understated and simple design, while attractive, features non chamfered hard edges that can dig into your wrist. These edges are extremely sharp and could easily cut your wrists. It easily cut Scotch Tape and even brass. I had to smooth it down and it is still uncomfortable to have my wrists rest on it. The keys are responsive and have a definite click with very minimal creep. There is ample wrist space. The trackpad has two physical buttons under it; a small one in the lower right corner (about an inch tall and 1/3rd of the width wide) that functions as a right-click, and a left-click under the entire rest of the trackpad. Typing is fairly easy, but the lack of a middle-click underscores that this laptop is really not going to do anything heavy under battery power and without external controls attached. Even just for web browsing and typing, lacking a middle-click to quickly close tabs is a bit annoying. One thing that easily disqualifies this trackpad from even lighter, less input speed intense, gaming (such as turn based strategy) is the total inability to simultaneously right click and left click. This renders many inputs simply impossible without an external mouse. Separate, physical mouse buttons for the trackpad would have been an improvement in usability. This would give you three buttons that could be used at the same time. Like many “gaming” laptops, this one will substantially reduce system power if not plugged into an outlet. This will amount to a reduction from ~240FPS to ~180FPS in CPU dependent tasks (e.g., emulation). Plugged in, the laptop’s score on Furmark GPU test is 4694 points (78 FPS, 60,000ms) but it degrades all the way to 636 points (11 FPS, 60,000) when on battery power. 3DMark gives a score of 5595 (GPU score of 5505 at 35.42 FPS for test 1 and 31.93 FPS for test 2, and CPU score of 9163 at 30.79 FPS) plugged in, but 1505 (1321 for gpu tests at 8.76 FPS and 7.47 FPS, and 7143 for CPU test at 240 fps) on battery. OCCT stress test refuses to run without the power plugged in, automatically canceling after a few seconds. In practical testing, Doom 2016 can be run at Ultra settings at fairly constant 120+ FPS with power in which, thanks to the high refresh rate of the display, is not simply a waste. On battery however, it can’t maintain 30 FPS with the same settings while idling without it. The audio is not the best and the equalizer is locked preventing options such as bass boost. The treble is too heavily boosted. The audio sounds muddy when using headphones. It is ok for listening to YouTube videos but not for music. Cooling is satisfactory. Even after a constant hour of taxing it, the laptop only goes from cool to room temp, plugged in or not. After an hour of gameplay on battery it also remained cool, but took 36% (emulation) to 50% (Doom 2016) of the battery. Going by ear, the cooling takes too long to kick in. It maintains a low fan speed until it gets very hot when it will go full blast. It takes a while to settle on a speed that will keep it cool. The need to be plugged to run on full power restricts any gaming that this laptop would be doing. For the most part that’s simply the limits of current battery technology rather than an unique issue with this laptop. Overall, I think that this is a good laptop. Some of the issues are just inherent in gaming laptops. Things like the audio and the sharp edges on the chassis are negatives as is the design of the trackpad. I would recommend this gaming laptop to a friend but I would make sure that they were aware of these issues.

The best stuff is always reserved for the exotically priced laptops. In short, I am loving this Omen Laptop! I will recommend this system to anyone who is looking for a laptop capable of great gaming performance at an affordable price. It does not have all the bells and whistles. Gaming and performance: The combination of AMD’s Ryzen 7 with Nvidia’s 1660 Ti is a real winner here. AMD, particularly, has moved from the jaws of pending bankruptcy to becoming a real powerhouse. Matching up AMD with Nvidia’s 1660ti is brilliant. I was surprised at how well these two handled my test games: Mechwarrior 5, Titan Fall 2, Civilization VI, Supreme Command 2, and Fortnight. I did test other games but felt these gave the best representation of what the system is capable of. First, lets talk about the low hanging fruit. Supreme Commander 2? Really? Yes. I chose this game specifically to test the single threaded performance of the Ryzen processor. To my delight, I was able to play this game, vs the computer, against four armies with hundreds of units each. The Omen laughed at this game. Sustained 99fps under all conditions. Single Ryzen logical core at 100%. Each physical core is split into two logical cores! So, half a core gave me butter smooth performance. Way to go AMD! In contrast, Civilization VI is a multicore, multi-threaded beast. See my screenshot of Civ, full settings, vs system rest state. This screenshot was taken while the game was at idle. Actual gameplay is smooth. It is also producing way too many FPS which cranks the cooling system into overdrive. More on the cooling system later. The average frame rate was 60 fps. I saw it go all the way up to 250fps and as far down as 40fps. I eventually limited the game to 40fps through Nvidia’s drive to reduce heat and fan noise. Titan Fall 2, in my opinion, is one of the best first-person shooters ever. I will not debate this with you! Titan Fall 2 is a high speed, high action, super twitch first person shooter. If you run this on a machine that drops frames, suffers screen tearing, dithers, or causes other screen artifacts then you will be destroyed in multiplayer. I was blown away by how smooth this game was on the Omen. No screen artifacts, period! I am an Xbox junky with this game. I can hold my own. I dominated with this laptop! In the spirit of full disclosure, I did use my Xbox Elite controller for this game. Which brings me to the game I do play using mouse and keyboard: Mechwarrior 5. I love giant robot games. This game moves like an FPS but only slower paced. In addition to using the WASD keys this game has controls spread all over the keyboard. I often found my fingers flying across my keyboard in the middle of combat to keep up with constantly changing situation on the battlefield. I did not experience any keyboard lag, missed keys presses, or any issues that arise from pressing multiple keys in quick succession or simultaneously. HP did a great job here with keyboard responsiveness. The GPU, on the other hand, took a little bit of work. This game is not a hyper velocity shooter. But there are plenty of opportunity to saturate the screen with fast movement, high level of environmental details, and special effects. This game is built on the Cry Engine 4. I was able to achieve frames ranging from 50fps to 100fps during game play. It can hit 250fps during the load screens. Finally, Fortnight. I am not going to say much about Fortnight other than I had this game playing butter smooth at maximum settings. The game bounced between 60fps and 120fps averaging about 90fps. It just worked. Cooling: The laptop’s cooling system gets louder the harder the laptop works. This thing can move some air! Civilization VI, default settings, was full hair dryer! Using Nvidia’s software, I was able t get an acceptable balance between fan noise, cooling, and performance by setting the game to 40fps. I noticed fps skyrocket on static scenes or black screens while loading content. All this does is create heat and wastes energy. Spending a few minutes mucking around with Nvidia’s software will reward you with less heat and fan noise in almost everything but the latest AAA title. How is the fan noise during every day, mundane tasks? It is as quiet as your typical office laptop. And, unlike my office issued work laptop, the Omen remains cool to the touch throughout the day regardless of workload of use. Room for improvement: First, sharp edges. I do like the case style. It looks super slick and modern. I love the hard angles, the Omen logo on the LCD bezel and the diamond on the cover, the 015 logo on the side of the palm rest, and how the palm wrest is slight elevated from the keyboard. It is all the little things that make this really work for me. However, the hard angles are bit too sharp for my wrist. I type proper with my wrists up. However, when I am not typing, my writs rest on the palm rest. This is where I scrap my wrists against the case. It is not sharp enough to cut but it is uncomfortable. Second, the keyboard lighting. I am just nit picking here. The RGB lighting is restricted to four pre-set keyboard zones. HP makes a programmable keyboard. Why not here? I like having the ability to set a color for each key or group of related keys. HP did a great job with what they did deliver. I love that the lighting can show brightly through the keys and around the keys. I love the affect. And it looks super cool in a darkened room. I just would have preferred individually programmable keys. One final thought, and HP can add this through software, is create a setting in Omen Command Center that allows me to set a single color and brightness level to all keys simultaneously. That way I can quickly set or change full keyboard colors and assign them to different game profiles. And finally, the touch pad. This one is plain annoying and years overdue to be addressed. Why is it that any laptop running a Synaptic touch pad includes the undocumented “cursor reposition while you type” feature? It is annoying and disruptive for the cursor to randomly reposition itself on the screen when typing, I do not know, a laptop review. I have seen this issue in various laptops from multiple manufactures for ten years or more. Can we fix this?! Final Conclusion: I would recommend this laptop to my best friend.

HP really did decide to completely revamp their Omen series gaming laptop this year, and the 2020 HP Omen 15 is a really impressive improvement from previous models. Not only did they ditch the old aesthetic that screams “I’m a gamer” and bring in a sleek and minimalistic design, but the latest mobile Ryzen processors bring massive performance gains at a much better price than intel variants. I’ve owned this laptop for about a month now, and the thermals are great, with no noticeable hot spots or throttling. However, it does come at the cost of relatively loud fan noise when doing intensive tasks. My only other complaint is that this laptop isn’t as thin (around 2.3 cm) or light (~5.4 lbs) as some ultra portable laptops, but that isn’t too much of a problem considering how much performance you get from this laptop. I’d recommend snagging this during a sale for at least a $100-200 discount (I got mines for around $950 on Black Friday, which is a steal), as the base price of $1350 is a little too expensive for this laptop’s specs.

This is my first gaming laptop and it is better than I expected. I’m not a hardcore gamer like some people but for the games that I do play, this surpassed all of my expectations. Everything is super smooth and runs like a dream. I am happy to finally have a decent laptop.

What we have here is a gaming laptop that can perform because it’s powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H 8 core CPU clocked at 2.9GHz, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB of dedicated video memory and 16 GB of DDR4 3200MHz memory; but where it shines the most is the incredible cooling capability. Are you tired of buying a gaming laptop to find out that the cooling is subpar or practically terrible? Well… if you are; definitely keep reading. If you are a heavy gamer and have had experience building your own custom PCs; you will understand that it’s important to have a rig that can perform all your games at your desired specifications while maintaining a nice temperature. The folks at HP behind the cooling of this laptop really deserve a pat on the back here. I am thoroughly impressed. I also own an older version of their HP OMEN Obelisk gaming desktop and honestly the cooling wasn’t as good as I expected. I ended up swapping out the CPU cooler for an AIO water-cooler to help lower the temps on that beast. But we’re not here to talk about that… We are here to talk about the HP - OMEN Gaming 15.6" Laptop - 15-EN0023DX. The design of the laptop is quite minimalistic. It doesn’t SCREAM gaming which in my opinion is perfect. I like what HP has done with the OMEN logo as well. The laptop looks very sleek and I am able to carry it around without people wondering what I whip out of my laptop bag. Come’on everyone… You know EXACTLY what I am talking about when you have one of those crazy looking gaming laptops that draws too much attention to you. Typically it’s either massive or it has all these crazy red colors. The only personal gripe I have with the design is that although the laptop doesn’t look cheap; a lot of plastic is used… including the touchpad. I noticed that because the screen is plastic; there tends to be a good amount of “flexing” going on when the laptop is closed. What I mean is that if you put this laptop in a laptop bag and you travel a lot; I’d be really careful about applying too much pressure on the screen side of the laptop because there’s a lot of “flexing” going on here due to the plastic housing of the screen and gap between the keyboard side of the laptop. The speakers aren’t amazing but they definitely aren’t bad. I personally felt that the keyboard definitely overall isn’t bad either but nothing really blew me away here as far as the build quality of the laptop goes. Again this is my opinion but I do feel that there could be some build quality improvements here. Performance is where this laptop shines though. I have to say I am honestly thoroughly impressed. I threw all the games I had in my different libraries such as Steam, Blizzard, Uplay, Origin and Epic (in no specific order). With the included software called OMEN Command Center, there’s honestly some nifty contents in there. You have achievements that you can accomplish and earn rewards, control the RGB keyboard, overclock the system along with other things and of course… Control the fan profiles. HP gives you the preset standards of Comfort, Default and Performance; including “auto” fan speed or “max” fan speed. When I ran FarCry 5 through my UPLAY+ on the Default fan profile with “auto” fan speed; I hovered around 65c for the GPU and 80c for CPU which is honestly really impressive for an air cooled gaming laptop. If that honestly isn’t good enough for you and you don’t mind a little more fan noise, you’re more than welcome to change the fan profile to performance and set the fan to max which will bring you in at around 58c for the GPU and 72c for the CPU. Next up I went ahead and threw BFV at this bad boy and was playing on Ultra with a solid 70 FPS with right around 80c on the GPU and 60c on the CPU (Fan mode: Performance; Auto). If that’s not convincing enough… I ran Resident Evil 3 on ultra and was getting a solid 80 FPS while the GPU hovered around 75c and the CPU hovered around 57c. Still not convincing enough? How about running Witcher 3 at a solid 60 FPS with no stutter or lag at 83c for the GPU although while the CPU was a little higher than I liked; still no issues with any thermal throttling due to the awesome cooling. I mean come on… That is AMAZING. Just an FYI, I run my games on either Ultra/High so this laptop being able to give me the performance and smooth gameplay without any temperature issues is really just fantastic. Also, if you are aware of what screen tearing is; this laptop’s monitor includes AMD Freesync which really helps and it boasts a 144Hz monitor. So for you first person shooters out there… enjoy! So in conclusion; what you’re getting here is a gaming laptop that can definitely play practically any game you want to throw at it. While you are throwing these games at it, you are supported with some phenomenal cooling thanks to HP’s team that designed the cooling of this laptop. As mentioned above; the only gripes I had were with the actual build quality of the laptop due to the plastic usage. Again, it doesn’t look terrible; I would’ve just liked to see less plastic used. Nonetheless! If you are in the market currently for a performance gaming laptop with steller cooling; please do yourself a favor and take a look at the HP Omen 15-EN0023DX at your local Best Buy. With this current redesign of the Omen line, HP has decided to broaden the appeal of their gaming laptops. Gone is the faceted, thick, razzle-dazzle gamer look. As it sits on your desk, it could be nearly any current medium to high-end laptop. When opened, you know it’s something else as the multi-colored keyboard lights up (You can change the colors or turn them off as you wish.) This means the new Omen can fit in as a home or office laptop, while at the same time, it’s still a very powerful gamer. The build quality is good and it looks fairly high end. The feel is solid with one notable exception. The screen/top is plastic and has quite a bit of flex open or closed. There’s a solid array of ports including both an HDMI and display port to power any external monitors or displays. Also included are 3 USB Type A, 1 USB Type C, a full-sized SD card reader (hurray), an ethernet connection, headphones, and power port. Yes, it charges with a round power port not USB C, but for a reason. The included power supply is a big 200W which is needed to keep up with the demand of this powerful machine when its guns are blazing. Along this line, nearly half of the bottom is an air intake for the two big fans, and the entire rear is an exhaust grill. This is a fast and very powerful laptop that keeps up with every game I threw its way. Project Cars and Crew 2 couldn’t even make it breath heavy. Bluetooth pairing with my Xbox One controller was flawless, and I noticed no delay while playing. The screen is 1920 x 1080 (truthfully enough for a 15” screen), and it’s bight, sharp and fast. I hooked up a 4K external monitor and ran different full resolution videos on both screens simultaneously without any issues. If you’re reading this review, you’ve already looked at the system specs, so I won’t repeat them. However, one big improvement they’ve made in the Omen line is the new and improved thermals. Most of the time it’s fairly quiet, but push things hard and those fans will spool up, but they will keep the unit and the keyboard comfortable. You and the internals don’t get cooked. So you get a ton of power, what don’t you get compared to a mid/high end “regular” laptop? Even though there are a decent cam and mic, you don’t get face recognition or a fingerprint reader. The keyboard and trackpad are quite good but not class-leading. The same goes for the B&O speakers. They can be very loud and clear but no bass. If you want thunderous explosions or music, it’s time for good headphones or some exterior speakers. With Bluetooth 5, you can do that without wires and get high-quality sound. I definitely like this laptop and would recommend it. I can be both a work and play machine with its understated appearance and exceptional power. I’d say it might be the perfect student computer, but the flexy screen/top gives me pause in that regard. Only time will tell if that becomes an issue. HP has really upped their game with this version of the Omen … power, appearance, and cool running.

The only reason why I don't say this product is average, is that the battery life on this is either pretty bad, or mine is just a bad egg; I got mine a few days ago, installed one game, City Skylines on Steam, open it with the minimum brightness, no sound, energy saver on, leave it on pause while I watch TV, thing is under 50% after about 45 minutes. I hope I'm not asking for too much, but I was expecting at least 2 to e hours. I'm simple, not really expecting much more than that. But other than that, it runs fast, flawless, and no problems anything else.
