I’ve been wanting to try out a tankless printer, the idea of filling up the printer via bottle of ink sounds better than fighting with finding an “official” cartridge that works for your printer. HP hasn’t been on my list of suggested printers for many years due to issues with subscriptions and getting ink, but with a Tankless printer I thought I could give them a go. I decided to pick up the HP Smart Tank 7303 All-In-One Printer as my first tankless trial. Pros: - Easy guided setup via the HP App. - Easy to refill ink via bottles. - Compact with small footprint. Cons: - None Setup: HP knows how to package their printers, the outside of my box looked like it had taken quite a beating, but the printer and accessories were completely untouched. There are multiple cardboard spacers and light blue tapes holding the printer components in place that must be removed prior to use. Included in the box is the Smart Tank 7303 All-In-One Printer, 4 bottles of Ink, 2 Printer heads, and a power cable. The Printer weighs about 17lbs, with a fully expanded footprint of 17.8in by 17.3in by 9.8in. Both the front and top paper trays have paper catches that flip out if needed. I used my phone to perform the initial setup, as I intend to have this printer setup for the wireless network mainly. Initial Setup was an easy guided process, though I did have to restart the printer after turning it on for the first time for the HP app to find it on the initial setup. Otherwise, the app guides you through the setup from removing the temporary spacers to filling the Ink, overall, the setup was very painless, I was done in less than 30 minutes. Adding the printer to additional devices was just as simple. On a mobile device, using the HP app, adding the printer via the “+” sign at the top of the app screen and selecting “Add an existing printer”, then following the guided setup. On a PC, it was even easier using just the built-in Windows “Add Printer”, if your device is on the same wireless network. I had no issues connecting additional devices after the initial setup. Software: The HP app is easy to navigate, with the printer setup right on the home page when you open the app. As mentioned, the initial guided setup was very easy with clear step by step visual instructions. After the initial setup, the App provides details about the printer such as status and ink levels right from the home page. Clicking on the Printer provides access to additional options like Scanning and Printing, with specific options for each. Connectivity: The Smart Tank 7303 Printer supports Wireless and Wired connections; I was able to test each with no noticeable issues. For Wired connection, both USB and Ethernet are available. Cables are not included. For Wireless, Wi-Fi 2.4GHz and 5GHz connectivity are supported along with Wi-Fi direct, in the case where you want to directly connect to the printer wirelessly. Printing & Scanning: The HP Smart Tank 7303 prints great, both in black & white and color. I was most impressed with the color photo printing, as even printing on standard paper, the image came out clearly, and the picture did not smear. I’m looking forward to trying out some photo papers I’ve got coming. Speed wise, the printer can do up to 15 pages per minute in black & white, and 9 pages per minute in color. This is plenty good for a home inkjet-style printer. Scanning as well worked great; I liked that I could scan the documents directly to my phone when using the HP app. This was convenient for printing, signing, and scanning documents to send, as everything could be done from my phone without the need for a PC. Ink: HP includes 4 bottles of ink with the Printer, enough to fully fill all the tanks. HP makes the claim that it is “3 years’ worth” of ink, but your results will vary based on your usage. The good news is that at least if there is any ink inside the tanks, it won’t dry out within those 3 years as each tank is sealed from the air which keeps the ink fresh. No more going to print to only find out that your ink cartridge has dried out. Filling the tanks is easy, just open internal compartment of the printer, the lid under the scanning deck to expose both the ink wells and printer heads. Then flip up the little cap of the corresponding ink tank you want to fill: Black, Teal, Yellow, Magenta. Under the clear caps is a little punch that you align the ink bottles onto and push down; they will slowly drain while the ink well on the front of the printer fills up. If you follow the guided setup in the HP app it will walk you through the steps to fill the ink and install the ink heads. Similarly, the ink jet heads can be easily replaced by releasing them and snapping in a new one. Even better, I was able to find 3rd party ink available that likely work for this HP printer! Unlike cartridge systems that can check if you’re using official ink, the smart tank doesn’t seem to have any system for verifying the type of ink being used. But caution should be taken when using 3rd Party Ink, as quality can become an issue which could lead to lower quality prints and clogged heads, which would require replacement. Conclusion: For an HP Printer, I’m very impressed. I had no issues getting the printer setup and printing works great. The color photo printing is very impressive; I’ve got some photo paper on the way to test out more. The fact you don’t have to use only HP Ink puts the Smart Tank 7303 on my list of recommended printers, the first HP printer in a long time.

The body is white with a darker top. Up top there's an automatic document feeder, so you can insert a stack of pages in to scan or copy without feeding them one at a time. The control panel runs across the front and has a 2.8-inch LCD along with physical buttons. Having both the screen and real buttons makes it easy navigate and find what you need. The power button is on the left, and there's a Wi-Fi light that glows blue when it's connected. The part I like most is the ink setup. The tanks sit on the front right behind clear windows, so you can look at the printer and see how much ink is left. The ink bottles fit perfectly into each reservoir so you can't mix them up. It's actual ink in a liquid bottle that you can just attach and fill. The output tray pulls out from the front. - Setup/Performance - The two things that stand out most on this printer are how long the ink lasts and how much paper the tray holds. On the ink, if you print around 240 pages a month with a normal variety of prints, you're looking at roughly three years before you'd need to refill. Photos will use it up faster since they take more ink, but even then you still get a good number of prints out of it. On paper, the tray holds 250 sheets, which is about half a ream of copy paper, so you're not refilling it constantly. Setup was fast. I added the printer through the HP Smart app on my phone, and once that was done it showed up on my computer too. The phone walks you through finding the printer and getting it on your wireless, and the whole thing was easy. Print quality is very good. An 8.5 by 11" letter size page printed out quickly. Quality is great for basic light coverage prints all the way to full color glossy photos. The 7303 handles duplex printing easily so you don't have to manually flip it. The ADF is great for multi-part documents. Scanning is also a breeze. I've had a lot of frustration in the past getting the documents sent to my email, and this is intuitive and actually works well. Color prints at 9ppm and B&W 15ppm. I have been using this HP Smart Tank 7303 All-in-One Printer for the last 2 weeks and it's honestly exceeded my expectations. It has been one of the easiest and user-friendly printer I have used at home. I mainly used it to print important documents, regular scanning, making copies, and printing family photos and it handled all tasks with ease. The setup was much easier than I expected and filling the ink tanks was simple because the bottles were made to fit perfectly. The process was clean and effortless. Another step was to connect the printer to my home network which took only a few minutes and once it was connected everyone could print from their phones or devices without needing cables. Not to mention the quality of the prints that are picture perfect. The black text comes out looking sharp and easy to read even on normal paper. Color prints are bright and look clean without fading. I, myself, printed a couple photos and they came out looking nice and pleasant. They are perfect for family photos, albums, school projects, or crafts. One thing I liked was the automatic double sided printing. I don't print lots of documents but not having to flip through the pages manually saves both time and effort. The paper tray holds plenty of papers so I don't need to constantly refill it. The scanning is made simple as I can scan multiple pages using the automatic document feeder and it works smoothly without getting stuck. The scanned files come out looking clear and easy to read. HP helps eliminate that burden with allowing you to purchase ink bottles that are super easy to refill. This has always been on my mind as of late because it seems ridiculous to have to buy expensive ink cartridges after a few months even if you do not use your printer. As for this specific printer - The HP Smart tank 7303 is a good overall printer and scanner for those looking to print thousands of pages a month. HP recommends sticking to 400-800 pages of printing per month and a maximum of 5,000 pages in a given monthly cycle. The ink bottles themselves have a longevity of: HP 32XL 135-ml Black bottle (~6000 pages), HP 31 70-ml Cyan bottle (~8000 pages), HP 31 70-ml Magenta bottle (~8000 pages), HP 31 70-ml Yellow bottle (~8000 pages). Print speed is decent at 15ppm for black and 9ppm for color pages. Scanning at 1200dpi is always good. You can also copy and print up to 99 pages. As for setup, it took me a little bit to get the app to locate this device. I don't think the LCD on the printer is helpful much with providing useful information during setup. The printer button themselves seem standard but useless if you just use the app which seems easier to utilize.

Hardware and Setup - HP printers have a traditional look similar to those of most HP home printers. The design doesn’t stray far. It won't win any awards, but it's simple and attractive enough, I guess. Surprisingly, there is no large color LCD on this printer. There is just a thin strip-style screen for basic information and functionality like Wi-Fi status, quick copying (color and B&W buttons), etc. You'll really want to use the HP mobile app to get the most out of your printer versus using the on-board controls. Then again, thinking back to my past printers, I never really did use the on-board controls either. The setup was relatively straightforward: power on your printer, download (if you didn't already have it) the HP printer app, then follow the on-screen instructions to add a new printer. If you're familiar with HP printers, it's pretty much the same as it's been for years. Smart Tank - Unlike regular inkjet printers, this uses reservoirs to store ink volumes (from which you can clearly see the levels from the front of the printer). Filling each is as simple as popping a bottle down into the corresponding reservoir and letting it drain into it. Much less wasteful than inkjet cartridges. There are two printer heads that you still need to install, so make sure you do that. Oh, and when you do, remember to remove both the film and plastic before inserting them into the carriages. Performance - When it comes to printing, it's a great everyday printer. It's not going to blow your socks off in terms of speed or anything, but it gets the job done well for what you would expect from a home printer or even a small home office. Print quality is fine for almost all your printing needs. Even printing photos will look pretty darn good for most use cases; even displaying in a picture frame. Sure, it's not a photo printer, and you have to remember that, but again, it does a great job, especially given its large print tank. It remains unclear how long the ink will actually last. HP claims it can last up to three years. Who knows with actual usage, but I suspect it will last a very long time with my needs, as I only need a few pages here and there for recipes, forms, and whatnot. Full duplex printing capabilities is a huge plus, which not only saves paper, but is a great feature to have. The flatbed scanner and document feeder tray are great for scanning individual items or a tray full of papers. You can also use it to make copies directly from the printer itself. Pretty straightforward. Overall - Having used the 7303 printer for a little over a week now, I am pretty excited about how well it will fit in my household. The large ink tanks will certainly last a long time and serve a better purpose over traditional inkjet or subscription-style printers. The only downside is that the printer is larger to accommodate for the ink reservoirs. If you need a practical home printer that has good print quality, auto-duplex print capabilities, flatbed and document scanning, without the hassle of replacing cartridges too often, then this might just be the one for you.

This is my third smart-tank printer and it is genuinely as good as it's predecessors. It replaces a 5100 and honestly, I am even more impressed by this one. Like all HP printers, set-up is a breeze. Like a genuine Breeze. If you are not that tech savvy and want to have a printer that is just simply easy to set-up initially and operate, this is the one. Just use the app and everything gets taken care of by itself. You can directly print from any device in your home as long as they are connected to the same wifi as the printer. The genuine selling point is the 3 years worth of ink supply. That is more than enough and by the time you would need more ink, you probably would have moved on from the printer itself. Of course, this implies more of a home use rather than a consistent heavy use in the office. The transparent ink tanks make it easy to monitor ink levels at a glance, and the spill-resistant refill bottles appear thoughtfully designed to minimize mess. Print quality was another area where the HP Smart Tank 7303 leaves a positive impression. Black text appear crisp and well defined, making business documents easy to read. Color graphics look vibrant enough for presentations, newsletters, and classroom materials, while photographs display respectable detail and accurate colors for a general-purpose printer. Although dedicated photo printers can undoubtedly produce superior photographic prints, I feel that the Smart Tank strikes an excellent balance between document printing and occasional photo printing without trying to specialize in either. i have been using the hp smart tank 7303 for a couple weeks now and honestly im wondering why i didnt switch to an ink tank printer sooner. i was getting tired of buying expensive cartridges all the time, so the refillable tanks were the main reason i picked this one. filling the ink tanks was actually easier then i expected and way less messy then i thought it would be. setup was pretty simple. i had it connected to my wifi in maybe 15 minutes and was printing from my laptop and phone right after that. i mostly print work documents, shipping labels, and random stuff around the house, and everything has come out looking really sharp. color prints look surprisingly nice too. its also fast enough that im not sitting there waiting forever for a few pages to finish. one thing i really like is the automatic document feeder. i had to scan a stack of paperwork the other day and it saved me so much time compared to feeding one page at a time. automatic double sided printing is another feature i didnt think i would care about that much, but now i use it all the time. little things like that just make everyday printing easier. the hp smart app has worked pretty well for me too. ive printed from my phone a bunch of times and havent really had any connection issues. the printer reconnects to wifi on its own and just seems to work when i need it. thats honestly all i want from a printer because my old one always seemed to have some new problem every week. overall im really happy with it. the print quality is great, the refillable ink tanks should save a lot of money over time, and it handles printing, scanning, and copying without any headaches. if you print alot at home or have a small office, i think this is definitely worth checking out.

The HP Smart Tank 7303 is a home run for me as far as inkjet printers go. As a TIN member and IT professional (and husband of an educator) I have used dozens of printers over time. Our "daily drivers" at home have settled on 3 different printers - we use an HP black and white tank laser printer for the bulk of our printing, a different brand's color laser for classier color for work presentations, and an inkjet tank printer from another brand for everyday color printing. Having to install 3 different drivers / 3 different apps is a bit of a burden, so I welcome the opportunity to review a new HP inkjet with color tanks. Setting up the HP 7303 tank printer was a bit more of "a process" than my tank printer from another brand. In addition to filling the HP's internal tanks, you have to install print heads in the place where you'd install the ink cartridges in a standard inkjet printer. I think this is a great idea, personally - one of the biggest problems I have with my tank printer from the other brand is that it requires constant "nozzle cleaning" prints to get some of the colors to work correctly when it has been idle for anything more than a week or two, and I suspect that HP's method of using replaceable print heads is going to lead to much more serviceability and longer life for the printer itself. I just reviewed a different HP printer so I was already familiar with their AI generation features - which are definitely a gimmick, but a potentially useful one for printing birthday/special occasion cards, or invites, etc. Otherwise, the HP app in general is just "sleeker" than any other printer manufacturer, and seems to work quite well day to day. Print quality of the 7303 is fantastic, and feels at least as good as the (non-tank) HP Envy printer that I just reviewed a few months ago. I'm sure my family will get a ton of use out of over the next few years. I am really happy to see HP embracing tank inkjets like this as they feel like a much better deal as well as less wasteful. I have used several cartridge-free printers in the past, and this printer is definitely among one the best printers so far. The tank capacity is awesome, and it has top spec amongst the cartridge-free printers. I can do many many color prints without worrying about changing cartridges every several months. The printer supports automatic duplex printing and able to print up to 15 pages per minute in black and 9 pages per minute in color. It also has integrated scanner that supports ADF for a seamless scanning job. My favorite use case for this printer is printing photos. The pictures I got from family vacations? Print them. Photos from hiking last weekend? Print them. Got labels to print? Small thing. It doesn’t look like that my ink lose that much or I would be ordering ink anytime soon. I can keep on printing photos for an entire photo album without worrying about ordering cartridges. This printer is rated to print up to 8000 pages of colored prints. Of course, when printing photos at the best quality the printer would require more inks. In my experience I never require ordering inks for several years of using the printer every once in a while and even after printing several photo albums. HP’s print quality has always been consistently excellent that I don’t see the need to go to a photo studio. The printer also connects wirelessly to the network, and every member of the family can print straight from their devices: phones, PCs, iPads, etc. HP mobile app provides great monitoring system of the printer’s ink status. This is a great printer for the whole family.

So I received my HP Smart Tank 7303 a couple of weeks ago and have been testing it. HP is a brand that has been around for years. They have become an industry leader when it comes to home office and enterprise products from computers to printers and everything in between. I have used many HP products over the years that have been really great products and decided to give the new HP Smart Tank 7303 a run. Unboxing Includes: * HP Smart Tank 7303 printer * 4 Ink Bottles (Black, Yellow, Magenta and Cyan) * 2 Ink Cartridges (Black, and TriColor) * Power Cord * User Documentation First off, this being an inkjet-style type of printer, I’ve personally never seen a printer that uses the tank-based ink as well as cartridges at the same time. Safe to say you shouldn’t be running out of ink any time soon with this printer. That’s an automatic plus in my book right off the bat. Now I’ve set up plenty of printers over the years but this one the setup process was a little wonky to me, but I managed to get it done. Just took a little longer than it should have. Not sure if it was my fault or if following the included documentation was the problem. Filling up the individual ink tanks were easy, however, when it came to the cartridges I had to power the printer on and off a couple of times (which initially made me a little frustrated), to get the cartridge holder arm to slide over to the center which allowed me to press the release lever and remove the plastic orange packaging piece so I can install the cartridges. Whew!!! However, I got it setup without having to use the app; which I love. HP has some printers that you have to use their app to set up, which makes it harder in my opinion. Thankfully that’s not the case with this printer. But for those that must, you can follow through with their HP app which is available in the App Store for iOS or Google Play Store for Android. Now when it comes to print quality, the HP Smart Tank 7303 has done very well and is rather quick. Prints have come out crisp and clean without any smearing or bleeding text, that I’ve noticed in other printers before. And speaking of ink, HP really pushes signing up for their ink replenishment program, but with this particular printer they claim you can get up to 3 years’ worth of printing with the ink included. Remember not only does it come with the ink bottles for the individual colored tanks, but it also comes with 2 additional (old-style cartridges) for black ink and tricolor ink as well. Overall, it’s a very nice printer once you get past the setup process and get used to the very tiny almost non-existent screen. This will be a great printer for a small home office or for that student that’s getting ready to go off to college.

If you’re tired of selling a kidney every time your inkjet runs out of black ink, supertank printers like the HP Smart Tank 7303 sound like a dream. But before I get into why it might actually save your wallet, let's start with what makes this printer infuriating to use. Let’s be honest: HP made some weird design choices here that will test your patience. Considering the price, omitting a proper color touchscreen feels stingy to me. You're stuck with a tiny, 2-inch black-and-white icon screen. Trying to troubleshoot a paper jam or figure out why Wi-Fi is blinking via vaguecodes feels like reading hieroglyphics. Because the built-in screen is so basic, you have to to use the HP Smart app for almost everything—scanning adjustments, setup, alignment, and network management. In case of connectivity loss (which happens occasionally with home Wi-Fi), you're left high and dry trying to do basic tasks. If you need to print things like 40 pages under 2 minutes, look elsewhere. Maximus pages per minute is 15 for black and 9 for color. It's fine for everyday home or light office use, but noticeably slower than comparable lasers or high-speed inkjets. While black text is surprisingly sharp thanks to pigment ink, the color ink is dye-based. On standard 20lb copy paper, graphics and photos can look slightly muted or undersaturated out of the box unless you crank up the quality settings and use dedicated photo paper. I don’t mind, but some people might. Now that the cons are out of the way and despite its UI quirks, cost efficiency makes a compelling case for owning this printer. Personally, I don’t want to go back to cartridges options or subscriptions, especially because it comes with enough ink in the box to last a couple of years or longer (roughly 6,000 black pages and 8,000 color pages depending on usage). Refill bottles cost a fraction of HP cartridges, bringing your cost-per-page down to fractions of a cent. Also, refilling ink tanks are so much easier than it used to be. No risk of making a huge mess like it the past. HP nailed the bottle design here with a key-and-lock system that flips upside down, plugs in, and drains cleanly without squeezing or dripping. I really loved It also packs both Wi-Fi and a physical Gigabit Ethernet port which is my preference. If your primary goal is to stop paying for expensive ink cartridges and you regularly print multi-page documents, this is the printer to have. Otherwise, skip it if you hate relying on apps to manage your printer, or if you need an intuitive, full-featured touchscreen right on the device. Personally, I admit that I love having a touchscreen option, but I mostly rely on the app anyway. For the ink cost, I can easily live without that screen.

If you understand the value of you get what you pay for you will appreciate this printer. While it is not an inexpensive machine for home use, it is definitely a decent price point for small business use or heavy home office use. The printer is quiet and very reliable. It is packaged very securely to ensure that no damage to internal mechanisms takes place prior to delivery and installation. While there is an option to set this printer up without the app JUST USE THE APP. It may feel a little over explained for experienced IT oriented people, but the app makes this install/setup very SIMPLE and step by step. You actually need to follow the prompts in the app in order to get the print head carriage to move so you can remove the protective inserts to install the print heads. Pros:This printer is fairly compact for being a mid range multifunction printer. Setup was seamless via HP app. Instructions were easy to follow and ink was very easy to load. Excellent print speed and print quality even for photos. AirPrint works seamlessly. Copy and scan worked easily. Cons: paper tray does not slide open and closed easily; it sticks. Instructions stated that I would have leftover black ink, but the tank held the entire bottle. Small screen for functions. The mobile fax feature seemed easy to set up, but was not clear on minimum requirements to make it work. Could not send fax.

I have owned a lot of printers and from every major brand. From inkjet to lasers and also many high end office printers throughout the years. Each one has their advantages and disadvantages. I personally think inkjet printers, in general, has a better reproduction of photos than lasers. But this usually comes at a cost, ink. Price of ink can be quite high and depending on what you are printing, this cost can add up quickly. This is where the HP Smart Tank gets all of it's advantages. If you compare the included ink tanks with the average ink cartridge that comes with most deskjet printers, the size alone will tell you that you have more ink in the tank than the usual ones. The savings really do justify the initial cost, in my opinion. Especially if you print things on a regular basis like I do. I have a small company which I have to print invoices and work orders on a daily basis. I will easily recover the cost in a few print cycles. And this being an HP printer, the app that you install is flawless. I have been using it quite a while and I have to tell you, it has been so easy to use and navigate. And for me that is way more important than having a ton of features. Installation is straightforward, just follow the guide and it will give you step by step instructions. This Smart Tank is a banger and worth every penny.
