About this product

Michael Hurd was born in Gloucester in 1928, the son of a self-employed cabinetmaker and upholsterer. National Service with the Intelligence Corps involved a posting to Vienna, where he developed a burgeoning passion for opera. He studied at Pembroke College, Oxford with Sir Thomas Armstrong and Dr. Bernard Rose and became President of the University Music Society. Hurd's love of literature and the human voice illuminated a natural talent for word-setting. Hence his catalogue is dominated by choral and vocal works, including operas, 'pop' cantatas, songs and anthems. He was especially noted for his many scores for children and amateurs, and his care to ensure that the material he wrote was within the reach of non-professional singers and accompanists accords with his conviction that composers should adopt a practical approach to their craft. This is volume two of Michael Hurd's choral music, and also includes his complete solo songs for voice and piano.

Schneider - Colors of Saxophones - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

WERGO is proud to present a further album by Enjott Schneider. In InchClair Obscur - Colors of SaxophonesInch, extreme contrasts play a defining role beautiful and ugly, loud and soft, bright and dark - all these qualities are brought to life by the Berlin saxophone quartet, clair-obscur. The musical spectrum ranges from Old Masters to the extreme fringes of contemporary music. Cri Muet for saxophone and orchestra brings together tender lyricism and machine-like rhythms, along with Beethoven quotations and contemporary atonal harmonies. As Times Go Bye for alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone plays with the concept of time using motivic material from Johann Sebastian Bach. In Pavane, old and new meet in the contrasting sounds of saxophone and English Horn as well as in references to the music of the Spanish Renaissance composer Luis de Milán. In Berlin Punk, Enjott Schneider attempts to transpose the attitude and character of Punk culture into a symphonic setting. Rough, loud, dirty, insolent, and aggressive, yet also lyrical, poetic, and yearning this is the impressive emotional range that is radically achieved in the virtuoso performances by the members of clair-obscur.
