About this product
This anthology of sacred works - all of which could be used in the liturgies of the Christmas festivities - features some of the leading musicians active in Venice in the 16th and 17th centuries. They range from the earliest, Andrea Gabrieli, who died in 1585, to the most recent, Francesco Cavalli, who died almost a century later, in 1676. At the centre of this broad chronological span we encounter not only veritable giants like Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi, but also prominent musicians connected to them, such as the Saxon composer Heinrich Schu¨tz, Giovanni Bassano and Alessandro Grandi. After three successful albums on Arcana, Natale veneziano inaugurates a new series by Il Pomo d'Oro. This recording shines a spotlight on the choir of Il Pomo d'Oro, which has accompanied the orchestra's activities under the direction of specialist Giuseppe Maletto since 2021. Album Tracks 1. Hodie Christus Natus Est, SWV 456 2. Dixit Dominus I, SV 191 3. Angelus Ad Pastores Ait 4. Confitebor Tibi Domine I, SV 265 5. Quem Vidistis Pastores 6. Beatus Vir II, SV 269 7. Well established in the field of historically informed performance, the Italian ensemble Il Pomo d'Oro has recently expanded it now includes a choir, and this is it's first solo recording. Conducted by Giuseppe Maletto, the ensemble presents here Gesualdo's fascinating first book of Sacræ Cantiones. Less well known than his madrigals, the nineteen five-part motets that make up this work explore the theme of repentance through the Liturgy of Penance and the figure of the Virgin Mary. The painfully voluptuous chromaticism and the expressive intensity and refinement of the lines make this work one of the most singular of that period. Gesualdo's interpretation of the liturgical text is intensely dramatic and highly personal. Il Pomo d'Oro renders perfectly the mysterious beauty of this music. Album Tracks 1. Gesualdo Ave Regina Cœlorum 2. Gesualdo Venit Lumen Tuum 3. Gesualdo Ave, Dulcissima Maria 4. Gesualdo Reminiscere Miserationum Tuarum 5. Gesualdo Dignare Me Laudare Te 6. The WESER-RENAISSANCE ensemble had two goals in mind in it's concert series InchBreslau - A City in the Heart of EuropeInch the first was to offer musical enjoyment and the second was to remember an old cultural environment that had been forgotten for many decades. The music manuscripts and printed editions discovered in the Berlin State Library attest to the great diversity and high quality of music culture in what was once the capital of Silesia. InchDie Geburt unsers Herrn and Heylands Jesu ChristiInch (The Birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ), a Christmas narrative by Tobias Zeutschner, who was active at Breslau's principal churches St. Bernhardin and St. Mary Magdalene, forms the focus of the present selection from these sources in a program entitled InchWeihnachten i'm Breslau des 17. Jahrhunderts - Festmusik in der Kirche St. Maria MagdalenaInch (Christmas in Seventeenth-Century Breslau - Festive Music in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene). This early example of a Biblical history composition is richly scored for eighteen voices.
