Why subscribe to it when you can get it for free. Except for top shelf movies, I can find most of what I want for free with this converter box. I found it a little pricey, that’s why I gave this only four stars. Still, much cheaper than a years worth of cable. I then use the savings to get the best 4K movies.

When TV first went digital we needed 3 boxes. In all those years only one box has quit working. Still have the other two and decided to finally replace the one that quit a few years ago. This is a great box that does the job so we can watch network TV on older TVs. Well worth the price.

A-D converters are becoming a rare commodity. This product was the only one in the store. That gave me some trepidation on the purchase. When I installed the the device for my parent's 1990s VCR, it was reasonably easy to set up, and it performed its function admirably. The receiver picked up more stations than either of their digital TV's receivers. The picture quality from the device was quite good. I said "Yes" to "I would recommend this to a friend" under protest. It is a required choice. In reality, I would recommend to a friend that they update their technology to a digital receiver. However, my stubborn parents are not prepared to give up their VCR because it "still works" (with terrible picture quality). But their old A-D converter just stopped working, so we needed to add this to get a signal for the VCR. Even though they have trouble figuring out the sequence of what to turn on to be able to record and view VHS, they still prefer that confusion to dealing with some new fangled thang. Accepting the devil they know.

I might be one of the few who is using this to connect to a Sony SXRD projector but there seem to very few good options for add-on TV tuners. I searched high & low & started by trying a generic tuner that had the option to pause & rewind. Unfortunately, that could barely function as a decent tuner and didn't even come close on the DVR functionality. After hours of searching for better options, I decided to give this Insignia Tuner a chance. While it doesn't have any DVR functionality and was more expensive than some of the other online options, I do have to say, it works great! Compared to those low cost, generic options, this works much better and despite the smaller feature set, I really do believe it's the best option out there. If you're debating about this or some of the other, less expensive, more feature rich, generic options out there, save yourself the headache & buy this!

I have been buying these tuners for years, but for a different reason - to be able to turn digital TV signals into analog TV. Now there's a new reason to buy - an HDMI output. I am a streaming household, so I don't have cable or satellite. The downside is that I don't have local channels in my home office, and despite having a large 4K computer monitor to work with I had no way to follow local channels and the network programming (think NFL and other live sports) they carry while getting some work done. Enter the newest version of the Insignia digital-to-analog converter - which now has one very digital-to-digital trick). Originally designed for your grandma to be able to watch locals on her outdated tube TV, the big addition to this kit is the HDMI output and the promise to allow HD programming on your computer monitor. Technically this is true, but the highest resolution output I have been able to achieve is a 720i connection, with the alternative of 480p. While I realize that the broadcasters determine the maximum resolution they choose to transmit at, there are certainly some live TV programs that are available at 1080p full HD. Still, it was great being able to pop up the NFC Championship game in a window on my LG monitor, and I expect it won't be long before a version offering full HD is available - for which I would revise my opinion to five stars.
