About this product
Jackie Lee Cochran - Rocks - With Jackie Lee Cochran, Bear Family presents a rockabilly performer known for his handful of incredibly effective numbers recorded in the mid-1950s. -Twenty or thirty years later, Cochran became a star of the rockabilly revival. -This 'Rocks' CD contains rare recordings from the 1950s made in Dallas and Los Angeles, such as Hip Shakin' Mama and I Want You. -It also includes his comeback recordings from the 1980s and '90s, his contribution to the rockabilly fever that swept across Europe in particular at the end of the last century! It took an outsized personality as well as a snarling set of pipes to stand out on the mid-1950s rockabilly circuit. Jackie Lee Cochran possessed both by the bushel. When the rockabilly revival exploded during the '70s and '80s, Jackie Lee was perfect situated to exploit the movement to the fullest, cutting far more material than he had his first time around. Bear Family's 'Jackie Lee Cochran Rocks' generously surveys both important periods in Cochran's career; other than his seminal Dallas-cut 1956 debut single for Sims Records pairing Riverside Jump and Hip Shakin' Mama, Jackie did a lot of recording in Los Angeles, including his lone '57 Decca pairing of Ruby Pearl and Mama Don't You Think I Know, his 1958 singles for Spry (Pity Me) and Viv/Avalon/ABC-Paramount (I Want You b/w Buy A Car), and a steamy '59 effort for Jaguar - and they're all here. There's also a generous sampling of his impressive comeback output for Ronny Weiser's Rollin' Rock imprint, often featuring Ray Campi's bass slapping, as well as '80s and '90s performances that decisively show Cochran still had plenty left in his tank. From his days on 'The Big InchDInch Jamboree' when his manager constructed an eight-foot-tall wooden silhouette of a black cat with illuminated red eyes for his eerie stage backdrop to when he regularly sent European

![Jackie Lee Cochran - 1985 Sessions - COMPACT DISCS [CD]](https://pisces.bbystatic.com/image2/BestBuy_US/images/products/b0d4b21f-36d3-4f57-99b1-4674da0d7ded.jpg;maxHeight=422;maxWidth=264?format=webp)
This is a fantastic 1985 comeback album from one of the legendary names in rockabilly, making it's CD debut after nearly 20 years. Backed by the UK's own Johnny and the Roccos - whose own 1985 album was recorded at just about the same time, forming the second half of this CD - Cochran was still in fantastic vocal form when Mike Vernon took him into the studio to record these cuts - all of which were specially composed for the session. The original two albums featured here are augmented by both sides of a rare Roccos 45 and the band's storming, previously-unissued take on 'Matchbox', recorded for, but omitted from, the Tearin' Up the Border album. Proudly presenting our reissue of the sought-after 1978 album 'Ritmo y Sabor' from Cuban, master bongo player, Manteca. A deep, hypnotic, sonic excursion of Afro-Cuban/mambo rhythms to get lost within. Released in 1978, there are a number of different pressings of the album coming out on labels including GRC, Desca Records and Sound Triangle Records. Stripped-back and low-fi, this is a pulsating hit of instrumental Latin-jazz dance magic.Predominantly made up of just percussion and bass, the album comes courtesy of Carlos InchRicoInch Ramirez on bass, Carlos Patato on congas, timbales by Nelson Padron and Lazaro Pla aka Manteca as band leader. A Cuban legend, Manteca rose to fame playing with Ernesto Lecuona and the Cuban Boys. Although he featured on numerous recordings in his home of Cuba, only a handful exist of his as featured soloist or band leader. A whirlwind of percussive brilliance, 'Ritmo y Sabor' is brimming with energy regardless of the tempo of the track. An instantaneous ability to make you move, the grooves come alive with each new rhythm introduced. Take for instance, the track 'Afro Funky' that more than lives up to it's name. A breakbeat Latin-funk workout, with a mighty fine walking bass line that provides the basis for the drummers to vibe off. Elsewhere, 'Rumbon en Casa de Cando' is fast and furious perfect for the jazz dance specialist, whilst 'Sabor A Mantecado' keeps you on your toes with it's trance-like repetitive bassline and percussive interplay. 'Cosa de Manteca' is another heavy-Latin funk gem with a rough and raw feeling of relentless yet groove-driven percussion.A must-have Afro-Cuban, rhythmic funk triumph, that shows Manteca and his band in full flight
