James Yorkston and The Second Hand Orchestra will The Wide, Wide River on January 22nd. The album came to be after the blossoming of a long-term friendship between James Yorkston and Karl-Jonas Winqvist, the Swedish music producer, leader and conductor of The Second Hand Orchestra. Recorded and mixed in Sweden over the course of three days with a selection of musicians Winqvist had brought together, including Peter Morén (Peter, Bjorn & John), Cecilia Ã-sterholm, Emma Nordenstam (piano & cello) and Ulrika Gyllenberg (violin). The Wide, Wide River is a soothing, warm and sublime listen, The record takes in past loves, advancing age and friends, now gone, whilst also containing some of the most sanguine songs Yorkston has ever made.Vinyl split Side A1. Twelve inch vinyl pressing of this 2012 EP. Eight years after their partnership began with the debut of Dig Yourself, Times New Viking and Siltbreeze join forces again for the band's 2012 outing six tracks, the result of a recent creative (albeit, modest) outpouring of ideas. What's interesting to note here is how the trio tempers the primal panic-punk of their salad days and fuses it with the sustained, keen pop skill found within their later catalog. It's hard to know where Times New Viking goes from here, but for right now, this perfectly distilled elixir of sound shows a band firing on all cylinders. What more can you ask for?
