![Tor Lind - Shostakovich: The Human Comedy; The Nose; The Shot - COMPACT DISCS [CD]](https://pisces.bbystatic.com/image2/BestBuy_US/images/products/9852ef49-ba35-4418-8e9f-768ce3376b2d.jpg;maxHeight=422;maxWidth=264?format=webp)
Shostakovich was known for his fun-loving attitude during his early years as a composer. The colourful incidental music for The Shot - reconstructed by Mark Fitz-Gerald from the original piano scores - vividly evokes the raucous life of experimental youth theatre in Leningrad during the late 1920s. This carefree world had changed dramatically by 1934 when Shostakovich completed his music for The Human Comedy - a work that creates a charming atmosphere of Parisian escapism. Discarded movements from his first opera The Nose form an entire orchestral suite. The programme concludes with Mark Fitz-Gerald's reconstruction of the March of the Anarchists, transcribed by ear from the film The Vyborg Side.

Everybody knows Jacques Offenbach's fantastic melodies the snappy Can-Can from his first international triumph InchOrphée aux enfers,Inch which had been danced in numerous film classics, or the Barcarole from InchLes contes d'Hoffmann.Inch His music sparkles with charming wit, ingenuity, and slapstick comedy. With his famous operettas, Offenbach established a new genre - political cabaret with enchanting musical ideas. Like no other, he hit the nerve of the time of Parisian life in the 1860 and 70s in his over 100 dramatic works. He composed as if on an assembly line. Pieces that flopped landed irretrievably in the bin. This recording by the Leipzig Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Nicolas Krüger is now dedicated to the little-known works that reflect the richness of this unique composer's multifaceted repertoire. In the caustic satires of the times, he turns dogs and carrots into rulers or abducts them to the worlds of knights and the moon Offenbach Fantastique!

The musical language of Bernd Stegmann (*1952) moves in seemingly very different stylistic spheres Elements of old a cappella culture stand next to hammered recitativo passages, big band effects next to minimal music sections, medieval-sounding drone fifths next to palatable Latin jazz harmonies. These heterogeneous building blocks are held together by an all-embracing motoric structure.
