About this product

I am too cowardly to be a proper composer, Hugo Wolf confessed to a Viennese friend when he was barely 28 years old. And the result of his introspection was not so wrong everything in his life, not only composing, proceeded in explosive spurts. He wandered through the deepest emotional valleys, suddenly flew up into the highest regions, suffered agonies when he couldn't think of anything to say, shouted his enthusiasm about a successful piece to the whole world and still managed to produce a respectable, albeit fragmentary oeuvre, from which the early poem Penthesilea after Heinrich von Kleist's tragedy of the same name stands out as a symphonic masterpiece. The Austrian baritone Benjamin Appl and the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, led by it's principal conductor Simon Gaudenz, have prefaced this highly dramatic monolith with twelve selected songs, most of which were orchestrated by their author himself a dozen small, finely polished gems based on texts by Goethe, Mörike and Heyse, whose subtle arrangements leave no doubt that Hugo Wolf would certainly have had the makings of a Inchproper composerInch. Whether then, of course, the ingenious things would have been created that posterity owes to him - that is another matter. Album Tracks 1. Schlafendes Jesuskind. Sohn der Jungfrau, Himmelskind! 2. Epiphanias. Die heil'gen drei König 3. Anakreons Grab. Wo die Rose hier blüht 4. Denk' es, o Seele. Ein Tannlein grünet wo 5. Prometheus. Bedecke deinen Himmel, Zeus 6. An den Schlaf. Schlaf! süßer Schlaf! 7. Harfenspieler I. Wer sich der Einsamkeit ergibt 8. Harfenspieler II. An die Türen will ich schleichen 9. Harfenspieler III. Wer nie sein Brot mit Tränen aß 10. Sterb' ich. Sterb' ich, so hüllt in Blumen 11. Gebet. Herr! schicke, was du willt 12. Fußreise. Am frischgeschnittnen Wanderstab 13. Penthesilea, Sinfonische Dichtung für großes Orches

Turku Philharmonic Orchestra - Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Composing has always formed an integral part of the artistic life of pianist-conductor Olli Mustonen. Mustonen studied composition under the direction of Einojuhani Rautavaara since the age of 8. His first compositions mainly consisted of chamber works, but in the early 2010s, Mustonen has emerged as a symphonist. This album contains two of his most latest symphonies. Mustonen's dramatic symphonies are firmly rooted and continuing the tradition of the great classical composers and seek inspiration from multiple sources. The theme of Mustonen's 2nd Symphony, 'Johannes Angelos' (2013), is Byzantium and the ancient city of Constantinople with it's mysticism. Mustonen's 3rd Symphony (2020) is based on the Songs 47-49 in the Finnish national epic Kalevala. This work has been inspired by the cosmic and shamanistic elements in Finnish mythology. In this recording, the solo part is sung by Ian Bostridge who also premiered the work. Album Tracks 2. Symphony No. 3, InchTaivaanvalotInch (Heavenly Lights) for Tenor and Orchestra~Bars 265-497 (Still the Sun Is Not Shining) 7. Symphony No. 2, InchJohannes AngelosInch~III. At the Church of the Holy Apostles 8. Symphony No. 2, InchJohannes AngelosInch~IV. Aleo e polis

Cipriani Potter - Potter: Complete Symphonies, Vol. 2 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Unlike his namesake Harry, Cypriani Potter did not learn his craft at Hogwarts, but with renowned British composers and then put the finishing touches to his music in Vienna - above all with Ludwig van Beethoven, who undoubtedly taught him some particularly effective tricks. In any case, there is an unmistakable magic in his works at times it is delightful melodies, at others dramatic energy build-ups or rhythmically urgent episodes that give his music such an appeal that it is worth recording all of his surviving symphonies (nine, after all) and garnishing them with a few smaller pieces - in the present program, for example, with the Overture to Shakespeare's Tempest and with the original Concertante for piano and four strings on the popular theme La Follia, which Potter animates to a veritable outburst of temperament. Album Tracks 1. Symphony in C minor~Allegro con fuoco 2. Symphony in C minor~Andante con moto 9. Overture to InchThe TempestInch
