FS3 delineates a more subtle Inchcinema of the earInch, and a cold approach to reflecting on experience without leveraging tropes or familiarity. Emotional exploration through sound can become so indulgent that it overshadows the journey. JH1. FS3 eschews mining the human condition as mediation, opting for nuanced analysis rather than vanity. Using the seeds of improvisation as their root construct, the duo work without code, vocabulary or genre. Instead, they systematically work as individuals in tandem, using disparate and varied sounds and sources to create gauzy collages of ideas, sound and visceral sense reaction. With each exposition on Trials and Tribulations, the duo ornately explores the relationship between space and time by reconfiguring the tendrils and fissures that bind them. Percussive oscillations, descant vocals, and deconstructed patterns create fields that vibrate, plunge, and drone. The settings heard on this disc meld together the talents of two outstanding creative artists, the composer Paul Honey and the poet Gregory Warren Wilson, producing a collection in which the inner life of the listener is both confronted and empowered.Warren Wilson's metaphysically-infused set of haiku, Earth's Imagined Corners, derives it's title from the seventh of John Donne's Divine Meditations, in an evocative setting for sixteen unaccompanied voices and solo cello. It was conceived as a sequence of four individual movements (Willows, Leatherback, Fireflies, Pomegranates), three of which invoke the fundamental elemental forces at work on our planet - water, earth, and fire. The final constant explored here is time, that boundless exponential continuum within which the human experience itself unfolds.
Vinyl LP pressing. 2021 . Nolan Potter is putting the home-recording freaks to shame. The world had a year of global pandemic to lay out it's grand ideas and the sum total of most artists Inchquar-riffsInch wouldn't push the constraints of a normal band practice (gosh, remember those?). Nolan Potter, in the meantime, has quietly painted a beatific masterpiece that veers from the whimsical to the wigged out, deftly weaving an untamed tapestry of sound all the while archly commenting on the present musician's predicament-and he did it alone. No drum machine clattering in the background amidst tape hiss and four-track grime here-this is a fully realized, insanely well played, full on rock record that might even one-up his first album, 2019's excellent Nightmare Forever. The guy's got more chops than a beauticians' college, across a wide array of instruments-no small feat, and easily overlooked when leaving the lyric sheet and credits on the dining room table. That the songs travel far, wide, up, down, backwards, and gamely spill out over the five minute mark with exceptionally loose interludes and diversions is just another marvel in this carnival of aural delights-it's a gem of a record and it's out on Castle Face.
