About this product

JIMMY SMITH / HOME COOKIN - The Incredible Jimmy Smith was a self-taught keyboard virtuoso who gave up the piano in 1954 in favor of the Hammond B3 organ, setting up shop in a warehouse in Philadelphia and woodshedding for a year before emerging with a revolutionary approach to the instrument that immediately caught the ear Alfred Lion. The Blue Note founder recorded the B3 innovator as often as he could between 1956-1963 in a range of different settings and released a tremendous run of albums that laid the foundation for the Soul Jazz movement. Drawn from three different sessions recorded in 1958-1959, Home Cookin' featured Smith in a quartet with tenor saxophonist Percy France, guitarist Kenny Burrell, and drummer Donald Bailey, and it stands as one of the most deeply soulful albums Smith ever made. The band gives a soul jazz symposium on this seven-song set that includes covers of tunes by Ma Rainey, Ray Charles, and Jimmy McGriff along with originals by Smith and Burrell. Album Tracks 1. See See Rider 2. Sugar Hill 3. I Got a Woman 4. Messin' Around 5. Gracie 6. Come on Baby 7. Motorin' Along

Dino Saluzzi - Albores - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

An album of soliloquies. After highly acclaimed music from the family band and orchestra, here is the great Argentinean bandoneon player Dino Saluzzi in his first purely solo project in decades. Recorded in Buenes Aires, it's a powerful reminder of his gifts as an intimate musical storyteller of great subtlety. Reaches back to early memories with InchDon CayeInch, a touching dedication to Dino's father. Reflects upon the fleeting passage of time, instrument and performer breathing as one. Album Tracks 1. Adiós Maestro Kancheli 2. Ausencias 3. Según Me Cuenta la Vida - Milonga 4. Íntimo 5. La Cruz Del Sur (2Da Cadencia) 6. Écuyère 7. Ficción 8. Don Caye - Variaciones Sobre Obra de Cayetano Saluzzi 9. Jimmy Smith - First Decade 1953-62 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Jimmy Smith was one of the first musicians to use the Hammond organ in jazz and popular music, taking it up in 1951 and establishing a formidable reputation in Philadelphia, before coming to prominence with his 1956 appearances at New York's Café Bohemia., followed by dates and Birdland and the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival, cementing his place as the pioneer of the Hammond in jazz and R&B. After occasional recordings early in the '50s, he recorded regularly with his own trio from 1956, and this collection chronicles that first decade of his career as he effectively established a sub-genre within popular music, recording prolifically for Blue Note while touring regularly, becoming a favourite with club audiences, who enjoyed the crossover feel of his music, incorporating contemporary rhythm and blues styles with sophisticated bop influences, as he used the organ to create a group sound in what became a familiar trio line-up with guitar and drums. This great value 4-CD set, includes tracks from most of his significant sessions and albums along with some 'live' recordings, and it provides an excellent overview of both the best-known and perhaps less familiar work from the formative decade of a career that lasted half a century, and is a great introduction to one of the influential and innovative figures in jazz and R&B in the post-war era.
