Alto returns the acclaimed 1996 recordings of J.S. Bach's St. John Passion by the King's College Choir, Cambridge under the direction of Stephen Cleobury, and joined by an impressive array of Baroque specialists headed by the tenor John Mark Ainsley (Evangelist), the bass Stephen Richardson as Christ, soprano Catherine Bott, alto Michael Chance, and baritone Stephen Vance. The orchestra, the Brandenburg Consort, founded by Roy Goodman, was one of the leading period-instrument ensembles specializing in the music J.S. Bach and his contemporaries. St. John Passion was first performed in 1724 as part of a church service during Holy Week at St. Thomas' Church in Leipzig with other items being added the following year, included in this recording ('1725 setting'), although later Bach reverted to the original 1724 version. With it's trial scenes St John Passion is noticeably more dramatic than the St. Matthew Passion which followed a couple of years later. InchA lively, well-paced version with original instruments and excellent team of characterful soloists, with the fresh-toned (King's Choir) boy trebles adding dramatic bite. What especially distinguishes this set is that the alternative numbers that Bach wrote for a revival in 1725, are given in an appendix, including the Chorale fantasy in place of the opening... The Centone di Sonate M.S. 112 is the last organic collection of sonate for violin and guitar composed by Paganini. The drawing up of this work, which is formed of 18 sonate evenly divided into three booklets (marked a, b and c) as was customary for a publication, probably began in Prague towards the end of 1828 and went on for several 11 years, during Paganini's tour in Europe. It seems likely that the title Centone was attributed to the manuscripts after the composer's death, during an operation of rearrangement of the unpublished material, with the purpose of generally indicating a collection of various pieces. Gianfranco Iannetta on violin and Walter Zanetti on guitar offer us the first six sonatas of the collection in a recording that for the first time is based solely on Paganini's autographed manuscripts.

One of the greatest blues/jazz singers of all time, short and stout Jimmy Rushing attained nationwide prominence beginning in 1936 with the Count Basie band. Rushing will always be remembered as InchMr. 5 x 5, five feet tall by five feet wide,Inch just as the lyric in his signature song describes. Recorded in New York City in December of 1953, the two rare tracks presented here feature Rushing backed by Frank InchFloorshowInch Culley, an alto and tenor saxophonist active on the R&B circuit in the late 1940's and early 1950's. The main soloist on this session is Culley on tenor sax, joined by his unidentified combo consisting of trumpet, piano, guitar, bass, and drums.
