About this product
Two extremely rare live recordings of the classic Zorn composition InchFencingInch from the early days of the Downtown scene. Featuring two realizations of the piece - one recorded at Zorn's artist loft The Theatre of Musical Optics with Eugene Chadbourne, Duck Baker, and Randy Hutton on guitars - and the other at Bard College with Chadbourne, Polly Bradfield, and John Zorn, a legendary concert that took place with George Lewis, Anthony Braxton, and Roscoe Mitchell in the audience. The music is astonishing - strange sounds, odd juxtapositions, stark silences, sudden explosions, all held together by a bizarre overarching compositional logic. Featuring a 16-page booklet replete with photos, scores, and extensive notes and remembrances by Zorn, Chadbourne, Baker, and George Lewis, this is a collector's dream. Vexing and powerful sounds from the 1978 New York Underground! Album Tracks 1. Fencing [Live at the Theatre of Musical Optics] 2. Fencing [Live at Bard]

Featuring the same magical Templar quartet from in Sacred Blood, the Last Judgment is the final CD in the remarkable Moonchild septology. The band has explored many different worlds in the 8 years of their existence, and this CD takes a moody and lyrical approach with Medeski's organ fully integrated into the band. Once again inspired by the legend of the powerful Knights Templar and their tragic demise under accusations of heresy in 1307, Zorn has composed a suite of pieces with a strong sense of continuity and emotional impact. Mike Patton draws on every vocal technique in his huge arsenal and the rhythm section of Dunn and Baron are tighter than ever. The last piece of the Moonchild puzzle?essential! Lyricist John Zorn. Jay Campbell (JACK Quartet) and Michael Nicolas (Brooklyn Rider) are two of the greatest cellists in new music. Long-time members of Zorn's inner circle, here they perform four compositions written expressly for them. Featuring two works for solo cello and two works for cello and rhythm section, the music is filled with spectacular leaps, intense textures, dizzying tremolos, hypnotic ostinatos, scordatura and more! As always, Zorn pushes the envelope of what is technically possible on the instrument and Mike and Jay come to the plate full force, exhibiting a new level of virtuosity in these breathtaking and dramatic works. With Ches Smith on drums and Jorge Roeder on bass this is a cello recital unlike any other! Album Tracks 1. Shapeshifter (Take One) 2. Autumn Rhythm 3. Diableries 4. As Above, So Below 5. Shapeshifter (Take Two)
