Johnny Cash - Hey Porter - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Johnny Cash had just married a woman from Texas named Vivian Leberto and moved to Memphis when he formed a little country trio with guitarist Luther Perkins and bassist Marshall Grant, and eventually they wrangled an audition with Sam Phillips at Sun Records in Memphis. Phillips signed him to the tag and the rest, well, is history. These are the tracks that got Cash's career rolling, and since he never really changed his approach as a singer through the years, they still hold up very, very well.

Tamsin Waley-Cohen, a violinist of 'fearless intensity' (The Guardian), explores post-1944 solo repertoire, pushing the instrument to it's limits on Soli, her new on Signum Classics. Bartók's Solo Sonata, an 'Everest' of the violin repertoire, sits at the heart of this recording which also includes Krzysztof Penderecki's Cadenza, and miniatures by Elliott Carter, György Kurtág and George Benjamin. Ms. Waley-Cohen's adventurous and varied career includes performances with the RPO, LPO and BBC orchestras, conductors Andrew Litton and Tamas Vasary, and an InchArtist in ResidenceInch association with Orchestra of the Swan. Performances have taken her across the UK, Europe, to the USA and the Antipodes. An in-demand recitalist, Tamsin enjoys a successful performing and recording duo partnership with pianist and composer Huw Watkins. Her interest in contemporary music has led to strong relationships with contemporary composers, including Mr. Watkins', Richard Causton, Joseph Phibbs, and Torsten Rasch.

Out of print in the U.S.! Johnny Cash had already recorded some of the most important Country albums in the history of the genre, yet, although he was still making quality music throughout the '80s, record sales and tag support were the lowest he'd ever experienced in his entire career. By the early '90s, he was without a tag for the first time in four decades. Longtime fan, tag owner and producer Rick Rubin stepped in, asked Johnny to return to his roots and together, they re-created the legend of the Man in Black. Features Cash performing his own compositions as well as songs from Loudon Wainwright, Leonard Cohen, Nick Lowe, Tom Waits and Glenn Danzig. American Recordings earned Johnny a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. A stunning return to form. Warner.
