The glass pendant first became popular around the turn of the century, when homes were switching from gas lighting (which required glass shades) to electric. The ability to show wealth by exposing your bulbs, and therefore your trendy new electricity, was one of the first home decor trends in lighting. Still as relevant today as then, this styles evokes the classic though it features upgrades like oil rubbed bronze, adjustable hanging lengths, and LED compatibility -- so you rarely have to get on the ladder to change the bulb.

This conical pendant light fixture has retro flair for a mid-century home, yet simple enough for a modern farmhouse. The large glass shade is accented by minimalist fittings in a sleek nickel finish. A single Edison-style LED bulb provides warm, bright light over the kitchen island, dining room table, desk or bedroom nightstand.

Though originally used in pharmacies because of their simple upkeep -- the glass is simple to dust, bulbs easily changed from removing the shade from below -- this pendant's silhouette is perhaps most famously known by students of the 1950s as "the schoolhouse pendant" thanks to a large government order that made this the official light of chemistry labs until the mid-70s when fluorescents were installed (forgive them!).
