About this product
The craft is tight, the feeling is refreshing, the sound is quick and precise... covering a full range of expressive energy. - All About Jazz. With Nomad, tenor saxophonist Jordan Vanhemert celebrates Korean culture through the melodies of both ancient & contemporary folk & children's songs, distilled through a modern jazz aesthetic and the open sonic canvas of a saxophone trio. His warm sound, unhurried phrasing and swinging melodicism is perfectly suited for high-level exploration of the jazz canon, but here, mainly with the eminent Rodney Whitaker on bass and David Alvarez III on drums, VanHemert offers a new repertoire, reminiscent of the gems rolled out by Sonny Rollins's trio of the late '50s. Following his 2021 , InchI Am Not A Virus,Inch which dealt head-on with the reality of anti-Asian hate crimes and prejudice, InchNomad Inch... wanders and weaves through the story of our complex relationships with being Korean American. There is joy, there is sorrow (han), and through it all, there is the authenticity of the Asian American experience.Inch

The craft is tight, the feeling is refreshing, the sound is quick and precise, and the gestalt brings the individual voices of the musicians into group form. - Robin James, All About Jazz. With an all-star, monumentally swinging band in tow, saxophonist Jordan VanHemert returns to his roots on InchDeep in the Soil,Inch setting aside his usual tenor saxophone for the alto, and revisiting the sounds and life-force of Charlie Parker, whose music first shaped his playing. On a quest of growth and mastery as a saxophonist, composer and musician, Jordan Vanhemert found equally important his efforts to contextualize difficulties of his life experiences. Within some deeper themes, including coming of age as a Korean adoptee, he's discovered in the process, resilience, optimism and joy. Jordan's music is meant to convey empathy and solidarity to others, and this album, Jordan's fifth as a leader, effectively fulfills these simultaneous pursuits.
