Jory Vinikour - In Concert [COMPACT DISCS] date 11/15/2005

Double vinyl LP pressing, comes with brand new cover artwork and an altered track sequence. Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard are Dead Can Dance. Their music began as collages made from musical lineages, lost tribes and cultures long since forgotten - and by giving new life to so much from the past, they created a genuinely timeless body of work. They shared vocal responsibilities, and while Perry was certainly capable of haunting subtleties and real sonority as a singer, it was more often Gerrard's rhapsodic vocalizing that drew the attention of critics and fans. In a sense, Gerrard didn't simply sing for Dead Can Dance she made sounds with her voice, and turned that experience into something much larger and more far-ranging than mere singing. Into The Labyrinth (1993) is Dead Can Dance's sixth album. One of their most successful releases, it's title a reference to the Greek legend of Theseus going into the Labyrinth to slay the Minotaur. It came when Perry and Gerrard had embarked on more individual personal paths, now writing their songs independent of one another, and on separate continents. Engineered and produced by Brendan at his Quivvy Church studio in Ireland, the album is an audiophile benchmark and is also noted for being their first without any guests, instead they played all the instruments.

Two-time Grammy Award-nominated harpsichordist Jory Vinikour plays historically groundbreaking works by François Couperin (1668-1733) on an album comprising three inventive Couperin suites - the composer called them InchOrdresInch - combining traditional French Baroque dance movements with witty and atmospheric character pieces - miniature tone poems for solo harpsichord. Couperin's suites Inchare elegantly composed, concealing a complex, allusive and varied emotional world behind their highly wrought surfaceInch (Norton Grove Concise Encyclopedia of Music). Chicago-born, French-trained harpsichordist Vinikour is especially enamored of Couperin's Ordres Nos. 6, 7, and 8, calling them InchremarkableInch for their harmonically driven melodic invention and atmospheric unity within each suite. Highlights include the celebrated Les Baricades Mistérieuses from Ordre No. 6, which England's The Guardian calls Inchshimmering, kaleidoscopic and seductive, a sonic trompe l'oeil.Inch The compelling Les Amusemens from Ordre No. 7 is irresistibly sweet and melancholic. Order No. 8 offers masterful examples of established forms, culminating with a dramatic Passacaille.

Sono Luminus presents this group of modern works for harpsichord that takes full advantage of all of the tonal and harmonic characteristics of this dynamic instrument. This album brings a new musical spin to the instrument that is better associated with Bach, Rameau and Couperin. Towards the beginning of the 20th century, after more than a century of obscurity, the harpsichord enjoyed a conspicuous revival. This spirit of revival continues in this latest Sono Luminus , with many of the works on 'Toccatas' written for Mr. Vinikour.
