Junior Thomas aka Thomas McDowall is a songwriter, musician, vocalist and producer born north of Minneapolis, MN. He developed a sincere devotion to classic Jamaican music at a young age, listening to such artists as Dave Barker, The Bleechers, The Wailers, Phyllis Dillon and Alton Ellis.InchI wanted to make a record that was honest and true to the golden era of Jamaican musicInch says Thomas. After several conversations with reggae producer Brian Dixon, they both realized they were on the same page. Thomas showed up to Dixon's Volcano Lounge studio in Los Angeles a few weeks later ready to record. With Thomas and Dixon as the brainchildren and nucleus of the project, they began assembling the musicians now known as The Volcanos.The Volcanos are a collective of Southern California's most dignified musicians, specializing in Jamaica's InchGolden EraInch sound. Members of the Volcanos have worked with countless reggae legends, most notably Jimmy Cliff's 2012 Grammy award winning album Rebirth. Other notable works include The Aggrolites debut Dirty Reggae and The Aggrolites, Hepcat Push n' Shove and Right on Time, Western Standard Time's debut A Big Band Tribute to the Skatalites and Tim Armstrong's (Rancid) debut A Poet Life. For those of us who grew up in the '70s, this drive-in compilation of '50s and '60s Rock and Doo Wop, complete with Wolfman Jack introductions, was our introduction to this music. There are 41 jukebox hits here, and every one of them is a classic of its time (although two tracks InchAt the HopInch and InchShe's so FineInch are covers by the revival band Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids). In his 1973 movie, director George Lucas used the music (and the presence of mysterious deejay Wolfman) as the AM radio soundtrack to one night in suburban California, 1962. The idea was to capture and sustain an end of summer, end of innocence mood that's in the air throughout the picture not as a shortcut to establishing a period. There's an awful lot of spontaneous energy in these tunes-from Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, to the Platters and the Clovers and the Del-Vikings, to the Crests and the Beach Boys and also just a hint of melancholy that goes down very nicely with a burger, shake, and fries. Recorded following Bowie's move to West Berlin after a period of drug addiction and personal instability, Low became the first of three collaborations with musician Brian Eno and producer Tony Visconti, later termed the Berlin Trilogy. The album was in fact recorded largely in France, and marked a shift in Bowie's musical style toward an electronic and avant-garde approach that would be further explored on subsequent albums Heroes (1977) and Lodger (1979).
