About this product
The Julia Keefe Indigenous Big Band releases Incarnadine, a landmark debut album celebrating the diversity and vitality of Indigenous people in jazz. Led by acclaimed vocalist Julia Keefe (Nez Perce) and featuring a 16-piece ensemble of Native and Indigenous musicians from across Indian Country, the album draws on compositions made famous by 20th-century Indigenous jazz luminaries like Mildred Bailey and Jim Pepper alongside new works by contemporary Indigenous composers. Mali Obomsawin's InchWawasint8daInch transforms a Jesuit-translated Abenaki hymn into a haunting exploration of resilience and paradox. Delbert Anderson's three-movement DDAT Suite honors Dine code talkers and sacred tribal landscapes. Rogan Kahale's arrangement of Queen Liliuokalani's InchKu'u Pua i PaoakalaniInch brings a tender, cinematic sweep to the program. Incarnadine is history, protest, and celebration rolled into one, a necessary and overdue document of a vibrant jazz tradition that has long existed outside the mainstream spotlight. Fans of large ensemble jazz, vocally driven big band recordings, and socially conscious music will find this album both musically thrilling and deeply meaningful.

Julia Hulsmann's Quartet resurfaces with a fresh Norwegian voice on horn in tow and presents an attractive batch of originals that finds the group thoughtfully exploring common ground with a knack for adventure. As on past outings, each quartet member contributes music to the session, the leader herself being responsible for half the program. Saxophonist Uli Kempendorff's introduction to Julia's trio on 2019's Not Far From Here already brought a new dimension to the group's interplay. This sense is again amplified and expanded upon through the addition of Norwegian trumpeter Hildegunn Oiseth. Spellbinding lyricism and playful rhythmic and melodic interaction conspire throughout Under The Surface, a gem in Julia Hulsmann's increasingly impressive ECM oeuvre.

American vibraphonist Dave Pike gained fame from his work throughout the 60's with popular jazz flutist Herbie Mann, recording 11 albums with Mann's groups, also recorded with legendary pianists Bill Evans and Paul Bley. On moving to Europe, the Dave Pike Set became an instant success through the combination of Pike's vibes play and German Volker Kriegel's electric, acoustic, guitar and sitar play. Kriegel's compositions helped create the quartet's unique sound, encompassing jazz, funk, psychedelia, avant-garde, and ethno.
