In a six-year career in which Henson's work has been as diverse as it has been prolific, it is this small act of opening and closing the door, of letting the world in and shutting it out, which continues to form the struggle at the center of his art. More masterfully than ever before, Henson's third album builds upon the tension between stripped back, transparent confessional piano-ballads, and layered, experimental outbursts of mournful orchestration. Kindly Now is the natural culmination of a six-year journey of broad and fearless experimentation into a range of genres and mediums. Every tool at Henson's disposal is unified and brought to use in this highly wrought and unflinching album which, when experienced as a whole, becomes greater than the sum of it's parts.

A singer, songwriter, composer, and illustrator who rarely performs live due to chronic anxiety, Keaton Henson emerged in the public sphere in the early 2010s with his critically acclaimed debut album Dear. His last studio album, 2016's Kindly Now, reach the top 20 of Billboards Heatseekers chart. Following a world premiere in London by Britain Sinfonia, his orchestral work, Six Lethargies, was released on Decca imprint Mercury KX in 2019. His Monument tackles his his father's illness and tragic passing last year. While the subject matter is heavy, the stunning and powerful album is beautifully written and lyrically it's sublime.
Keaton Henson's Fragments EP was made as a companion piece to last year's Monument. Written and recorded at the same time, the lyrical themes and subjects may stray from Monument's poignant subject matter, but in it's sound and atmosphere, it feels suitably entwined. The eight tracks orbit a sweeping kaleidoscope of sonic shapes, shades and textures. Keaton's voice offers lyrics in an almost frozen romanticism. It's a voice that sounds rooted in turmoil, but also in strength. Julien Baker shares a mic from across the ocean in Australia on InchMarionetteInch. A songwriter of due reverence herself, Baker and Keaton share an affinity with the power of hushed words, fizzing melodies, and an innate wisdom. Fragments EP and Monument are two fine bodies of work by this singular, unique British artist, and two empathetic records of sorrow and strength.
