Kendrick Scott - Reverence - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. 2023 . Drummer and composer Kendrick Scott returns with the of Corridors, his third album for Blue Note Records, and first compositional treatment of trio context saxophone, bass, and drums. Corridors unveils an exposed rumination from the Houston-born artist and his acclaimed collaborators saxophonist Walter Smith III and bassist Reuben Rogers. Born during the pandemic lockdown, the record focuses on posing outward questions instead of inward contemplation.

For his Criss Cross debut, 33-year-old trumpet virtuoso Michael Rodriguez assembles a world-class New York quintet of generational peers (pianist Gerald Clayton and drummer Rodney Green) and mid-career masters (tenor saxophonist Chris Cheek and bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa) to perform six kinetic originals and a single standard, Portrait of Jennie. Known for his creative melodic approach and pellucid tone via consequential engagementsover the last decade with, among others, Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Bobby Watson, and Eddie Palmieri, Rodriguez blends youthful fire with a veteran's focus and mature intention, setting the tone for an immensely satisfying session.

For his fourth Criss Cross outing as a leader, trumpeter Jim Rotondi has chosen the two-horns-plus rhythm , presenting a program of compositions by Cedar Walton, Joe Henderson, Jimmy Rowles, Walter Davis Jr., Carole King & others, including one of his own works. Joining Jim are some of the finest players of the New York jazz scene - fellow Criss Cross artists Mike DiRubbo, Anthony Wonsey, John Webber & Willie Jones III.
