Kevin Burke & Cal Scott - Suite - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Sligo Made was recorded in County Sligo in the west of Ireland, an area steeped in traditional music. Kevin Burke, a son of Sligo parents and life-long aficionado of Sligo music, asked some of his friends, all internationally acclaimed players and all residents of the Sligo area, to join with him in making this CD Michael Holmes and Brian McDonagh from the renowned Irish band, Dervish; Steve Wickham of the Waterboys; multi instrumentalists Seamie O'Dowd and John Carty; piper Leonard Barry and bodhran player John Joe Kelly. The resulting performances are a glorious portrayal of the joy, intimacy and informality of traditional music at it's best - a welcome addition to Sligo's long musical history, Sligo Made.

Kevin Burke's traditional Irish fiddle meets John Brennan's rock guitar - two great players sharing their musical interests - one steeped in traditional Irish music while the other is a veteran California rocker. This album includes their interpretations of some 60's & 70's rock 'classics', blues and country tunes, a song about post-WWII Irish immigrants, two Bach minuets, and some re-imagined jigs and reels. Throughout the varied repertoire, the fiddle and electric guitar both share and exchange the melodies, comfortably complementing each other in the differing styles, whether it's the soaring orchestral beauty of a Hendrix tune featuring Irish pipes and whistles, the hard rocking riffs of an old spiritual, or the deep and genteel calm of Bach's minuets. Take a visit to Pound Ridge and be prepared for some spirited and original sounds from this unique musical partnership.
