Kim Richmond Ensemble - Live at Cafe Metropol - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

L.A.-based musician and big band icon, saxophonist, composer and arranger Kim Richmond has created a wide selection of albums in both small group and large ensemble settings. This CD, featuring his Concert Jazz Orchestra, blends a collection of original compositions and arrangements of classics into a rich, cinematic sound scape. InchI am seeking a broader emotional palette for Jazz,Inch states Richmond. InchI feel that all too often Jazz, especially for large ensemble, expresses only a small range of emotions. My writing for this 24-piece jazz orchestra combines elements of both large ensemble jazz with free-swinging improvisation and symphonic colors and textures. This is truly an orchestra rather than simply a jazz band.Inch Album Tracks 1. Continued Obscurity 2. Precious Promises 3. Fantasy on You Must Believe in Spring 4. Variations 5. Franz 6. Stella By Starlight 7. 3 Refractions 8. Tumbling Tumbleweeds 9. America the Beautiful

Bassist Kim Cass is among a vanguard group of Brooklyn-based improvisors who are creating works at the leading-edge of rhythmic acuity. Levs, his debut with Pi Recordings, features pianist Matt Mitchell and drummer Tyshawn Sorey, who called Cass Incha singular composer and player the man can do things that doesn't seem possible on the bass, displaying a technical command of the instrument on the level of the most celebrated virtuosic performers in any genre of music.Inch The compositions on Levs are deeply idiosyncratic, built on stilts of complex, polyrhythmic structures over a sea of harmonic murkiness. Cass plays with a precision - often combining with the piano as a unified voice - that seems beyond the instrument's technical limitations. Sorey's structured improvisations on the drums alternately reinforces and disrupts. It might project a façade of free improvisation, but exists as the direct result of intense, energetic coordination. Levs is volatile yet dreamlike, and imbued with a sense of ominous mystery.
