About this product

Star conductor Myung-Whun Chung is a cultural ambassador of his home country South Korea and has dedicated himself for many years to promoting young Korean artists. Since pianist Sunwook Kim won the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition in 2006 at the age of 18, he and Chung have enjoyed a close musical partnership. Sunwook Kim has received outstanding international reviews for his previous solo recordings of piano works by Beethoven, Brahms and Franck. The composer Johannes Brahms is very close to the pianist's heart and it is no coincidence that his Piano Concerto No. 1 was at the heart of Kim's Asia tour with the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden and it's first guest conductor in the fall of 2019. The recording of the Piano Concerto is complemented by the Six Piano Pieces, op. 118. The Piano Concerto was recorded live at the Seoul Arts Center in South Korea in September 2019 and the Six Piano Pieces in June 2020 in the Mendelssohn Hall of the Leipzig Gewandhaus.

Simon Callaghan - William Sterndale Bennett: Piano Concerto Nos. 4 & 6 and Concerto for Two Pianos - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Bennett was acknowledged both in England and Germany as an outstanding pianist, and his finest and most characteristic music was composed for his own instrument. As well as numerous works for solo piano, including two sonatas, he composed six piano concertos and a single-movement Caprice for piano and orchestra. He gave public performances of all his works for piano and orchestra with himself as soloist. It was during the heady days of Bennett's third long visit to his friends in Leipzig, from January to March 1842, that he mentioned in correspondence that he was working on a new concerto, which he hoped to perform before leaving for London. In the event, this did not happen, but a substantial amount of work must have been done at this stage on what was to become the unpublished Piano Concerto No. 6 in A minor, WO 48. Bennett did further work on the concerto in the summer of 1843 and hoped to publish it, but changes to his personal circumstances contributed towards further delays. His son claimed that he always intended it to be published, but as the years passed, the more out-of-date it became.

Dakota Jones - Black Light - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

In an age where artistic merit is awarded to those who shout the loudest, Dakota Jones pride themselves on an unwavering ability to leave a lasting impression. Spearheaded by Tristan Carter-Jones fierce and unashamedly uncensored songwriting, the band's fast-growing reputation as formidable live act has stamped Dakota Jones with the hell-hath-no-fury power of Chaka Khan, the wild spontaneity of Janis Joplin, and the honey-dripping sensuality of Marvin Gaye. Their debut album's message of proud black heritage and triumphant queerness manifests itself in Carter-Jones' ability to challenge norms of adulthood and femininity as she takes a deep dive into some of life's most visceral emotions. Serving as an instant tone setter, the album opens with the line InchStretch marks from growing painsInch with Carter-Jones lamenting the woes of adjusting to adulthood on lead single 'Did It To Myself' - her husky and commanding vocal instantly asserting it's place in the spotlight. The atmosphere soon turns steamy on the flirtatious title track 'Blacklight,' whilst fantasising over a modern-day Bonnie & Clyde love affair the funk-laden 'We Playin Bad Games' packs a punch with it's tale of free spirits entwined in a haze of late-night revelry. Production comes courtesy of the Grammy-winning John Wooler, ex Virgin Records A+R and founder of the Blues tag Pointblank who has worked with everyone from John Lee Hooker and John Hammond to Isaac Hayes and Van Morrison. The album also features a wealth of hugely talented and accomplished musicians, including backing vocalist Kudisan Kai, former backing vocalist for the likes of Elton John, Chaka Khan, Anita Baker, Natalie Cole, Beck, Sting, Mary J. Blige and Jill Scott. Also present; Grammy winning keyboardist Jon Gilutin, who has spent years working with some of the industry's most respected and iconic artists including Linda Ronstadt, Jame

Bartok / Cakmur - Piano Recital - SUPER-AUDIO CD [Super Audio CD (SACD)]

On the 3rd January 2019, only a few weeks after winning the 10th Hamamatsu International Piano Competition, Can Çakmur returned to the ACT CITY Concert Hall in Hamamatsu in order to record his début . Can's chosen programme reflects his wide-ranging musical interests - from Haydn's late F-minor set of variations and Schubert's early Sonata in E flat to Sacrifice from 2017, composed by Fuyuhiko Sasaki for the competition. Also included on the album are Liszt's transcription of the Beethoven song Adelaide, and Black Earth by Can's compatriot, the Turkish pianist and composer Fazil Say. Born in 1997, Can Çakmur (pronounced Djahn Tchakmur) studied in his native Ankara as well as in Paris, and is currently a student at the University of Music Franz Liszt in Weimar. He has performed widely in Turkey and has a particular interest in spreading classical music to a wider audience. But recent successes, which include a first prize at the 2017 Scottish International Piano Competition, are leading to an increasingly international career with appearances at prestigious venues such as the Salle Cortot in Paris and Usher Hall in Edinburgh, as well as an extensive tour of Japan in the spring of 2019. For the present , Can Çakmur has chosen to perform on the same instrument that he chose to play throughout the Hamamatsu competition, a Shigeru Kawai SK-EX full concert grand.
