King Curtis was an American saxophonist and bandleader who played rhythm and blues, soul, rock and roll, and soul jazz. He played riffs and solos on hit singles such as InchRespectInch by Aretha Franklin (1967), and InchYakety YakInch by The Coasters (1958) and his own InchSoul TwistInch (1962), InchSoul SerenadeInch (1964), and InchMemphis Soul StewInch (1967). His importance as a musician and a producer is underlined here by his collaborators Cornell Dupree, Eddie Hinton and The Swampers ; Eric Clapton and Delaney Bramlett on InchTeasin'Inch ; Jimmy Smith on InchSoulin'Inch ; and more. The album InchGet ReadyInch is nice instrumental Rhythm & Blues, still rooted in the 60s sound and features 10 tracks.

It's very unlikely that another saxophonist existed in the entirety of New York City that was as busy in the recording studio as King Curtis was in 1960 - and for that matter, during the years before and after. His diamond-hard yakety solos were crucial to the rock and roll success story of the Coasters, and King's instantly recognizable horn graced countless more '50s and '60s R&B platters as both bandleader and sideman. But Curtis was nothing if not a versatile presence in the studio. He was developing a solid reputation within the jazz field at the dawn of the decade, waxing albums for Prestige with the likes of Nat Adderley, Wynton Kelly, and Oliver Nelson in support.
